An underpass or flyover is being considered by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) as a way to ease traffic on Gurugram Golf Course Extension Road. According to Minister Rao Narbir Singh, the proposed underpass will cost roughly Rs 658 crore. However, because an underpass could become flooded, GMDA authorities prefer a flyover. A meeting presided over by the chief minister will make the ultimate decision.

A flyover or an underpass are the two possible options that the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has proposed to ease the severe traffic congestion on Gurugram Golf Course Extension Road, one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city. At a future meeting, which Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will lead, the project’s ultimate decision will be taken.

The six-kilometer section of the Gurugram-Sohna highway between Ghata village and Vatika Chowk is the focus of the proposed development. The goal of the project is to clear traffic at five key intersections: the T-point on Golf Course Road, the intersection of Kadarpur Road, Pioneer Park, and the vicinity of St. Xavier’s School.

Evaluating the Two Choices

The authority is now considering the advantages and disadvantages of every proposal:

Underpass:

The approximate cost is Rs 658 crore.

Advocates: According to State Industry and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh, the underpass should complement the original Golf Course Road’s aesthetic development. Additionally, vistas from nearby colonies and sectors would not be obstructed.

Challenge: GMDA officials have raised concerns about a high risk of waterlogging, as the area is near the Aravalli foothills and the Badshahpur Nala (monsoon drain). This could, however, be managed by installing a large pumping station and sump well.

Flyover:

Cost: Approximately Rs 578 crore.

Advocates: GMDA officials consider the flyover a more practical solution, primarily because it avoids the issue of waterlogging.

Challenge: A flyover could obstruct the visual landscape for residents in the surrounding high-rise buildings and sectors.

The final approval for either the flyover or the underpass now awaits the high-level GMDA meeting.
