Chandni Chowk trade groups to hold a key meet on Sept 30 over SC order ending stay on illegal structures; 750 houses face risk by Dec 31 deadline.
Trade associations have called a significant conference on September 30 to consider the next measures in response to a recent Supreme Court judgment that has an impact on construction in Chandni Chowk. The gathering will take place at the Delhi Hindustani Mercantile Association’s office.
The Supreme Court decided on Monday that the stay orders pertaining to the illegal construction in Chandni Chowk that were issued by the Delhi High Court and the MCD Tribunal would automatically expire on December 31. As a result, more than 750 homes in the historic market area may be sealed off or demolished.
Recently, the local member of parliament visited with a delegation of traders to request intervention. The president of the Cloth Market Chandni Chowk, Gopal Garg, stated following the conference that the trade groups have called for the central government to intervene or for them to be included as a party to the Supreme Court case. The goal of the September 30 meeting is to help all trade associations come to an agreement on a single plan of action.
Traders expressed their displeasure with the 18% GST on lehengas and sarees costing more than Rs 2,500 during the meeting with the MP, asking that these items be placed under the 5% GST bracket instead.
President Mukesh Sachdeva of the Delhi Hindustani Mercantile Association, General Secretary Shri Bhagwan Bansal, Treasurer Ramesh Garg, and Chairman Jagmohan Gotewale of the Udyog Vyapar Mandal were among the members of the delegation.
