Uttarakhand ’s ethanol use aids farmers and environment by blending 19% ethanol with gasoline, cutting emissions and boosting crop income.

Uttarakhand is already seeing significant environmental benefits from the usage of ethanol, even as the central government proposes increasing the amount of ethanol blended into gasoline to 27%. Currently, 19% of the 59.3 crore liters of gasoline consumed by the state each year is blended with ethanol.

By doing this, around 75,700 tonnes of oxygen are saved annually and more than 1,04,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide are kept out of the environment. According to officials, emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and other pollutants have also dropped.

In addition to helping the environment, ethanol use is opening up opportunities for industrial expansion, investment, and farmer income. Direct benefits are available to farmers that grow maize, sugarcane, and other cereals.

Uttarakhand ‘s Production of Ethanol

• India Glycols Limited, located in Kashipur, has a daily capacity of roughly 590 kiloliters.
• Haridwar: A proposed grain-based ethanol facility with a daily capacity of 50 kiloliters.
• The Cellulosic Ethanol Demo Plant will use biomass and crop leftovers to generate roughly 7,50,000 liters of ethanol per year.

Experts predict that if the cellulosic ethanol initiative is successful, stubble burning may be curbed, greatly reducing air pollution.

In addition to private mills, cooperative sugar mills are also creating action plans to increase ethanol production, according to Sugarcane Development and Sugar Industry Minister Saurabh Bahuguna.

“In addition to being a clean energy source for Uttarakhand, ethanol is also proving to be a solid basis for the state’s energy security and farmers’ financial independence,” Bahuguna stated.
