Dehradun Municipal Corporation sends tax bills via WhatsApp, warns defaulters, and taxes new buildings to boost city development programs.

By using WhatsApp for digital billing, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation has stepped up its efforts to speed up property tax collection. In order to facilitate immediate online transactions, taxpayers are now receiving bills with QR codes and direct payment connections. While a list of significant defaulters is being compiled for follow-up action, reminders are also being sent to defaulters.

Using a verified WhatsApp number with a blue checkmark acquired from Meta is part of the program, which was decided upon last month at a meeting presided over by Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal and Municipal Commissioner Namami Bansal. Officials claim that this measure will improve compliance while enabling citizens to make payments more quickly and conveniently.

Large defaulters will receive direct contact, according to Mayor Thapliyal, and those who persist in delaying payments in spite of numerous warnings may face legal action. Long-overdue establishments will be subject to penalties and a 12% interest rate.

Additionally, in order to avoid arrears, new properties will be taxed as soon as construction is finished. Commercial establishments in newly established wards will only have their current year’s taxes collected, with prior arrears waived as a kind of relief.

Commissioner Bansal emphasized that the effort aims to increase the corporation’s financial capacity to expedite city development initiatives, rather than only collecting revenue.
