Chaos at Actor-Politician’s Campaign Event
A massive election rally by Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay ended in tragedy on Saturday evening in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, when a sudden crowd surge led to at least 36 deaths and left 40 others injured. Officials confirmed that among the dead were 16 women, nine men, and six children.
36 Killed in Stampede at Vijay’s Karur Rally
The incident occurred during the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) campaign event “Velicham Veliyeru” (“Let There Be Light”). Thousands had gathered at Velusamypuram on the Karur–Erode highway when chaos erupted around 7.45 pm. Eyewitnesses said fans surged towards the barricades to catch a glimpse of Vijay, triggering a stampede-like crush.

How the Tragedy Unfolded
As the crowd pushed forward, many fainted in the suffocating rush. Families were separated, and several children were trampled before police and volunteers could intervene.
Live television footage showed Vijay halting his speech, distributing water to fainting supporters, and appealing for calm. At one point, the actor pleaded with the crowd to help locate a missing child.
Ambulances struggled to enter the jammed ground. Volunteers formed human chains to move the injured to safety. Most victims were taken to Karur District Headquarters Hospital, while others were referred to Erode and Tiruchirappalli medical colleges. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as several survivors remain critical.
Overcrowding and Inadequate Measures
Police said the rally drew nearly double the permitted crowd size. While permission had been granted for about 30,000 participants, reports suggest over 60,000 people attended, traveling from nearby districts by buses, tractors, and on foot.
The venue had already been shifted once after police flagged congestion risks in central Karur. Still, the new site at Velusamypuram could not handle the surge.
Despite restrictions — including mandatory barricades, separate entry and exit points, and a ban on multiple stages — controls collapsed once Vijay appeared. A police source admitted, “The turnout was much larger than projected. Barricades failed, and chokeholds formed at the entry points.”
Political Fallout and Inquiry
The district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry, reviewing video footage and testimonies to fix responsibility. Tamil Nadu ministers confirmed relief compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Chief Minister MK Stalin is expected to visit Karur to meet victims’ families. Opposition leaders, including AIADMK’s Edappadi K. Palaniswami and BJP state leaders, accused both the DMK government and TVK of negligence. Palaniswami said, “This tragic loss was avoidable. Safety measures were not in place.”
TVK, however, expressed grief while defending its preparations. Party spokesperson Bussy Anand said, “We followed police instructions. The overwhelming love for Vijay anna brought people in such numbers. We deeply mourn the lives lost.”
Why the Rally Was Significant for TVK
For Vijay, 51, one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, the rally was part of a statewide tour ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. His party, TVK, surprised observers by polling nearly 10% of the vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, especially among young and first-time voters.
The Karur rally, drawing unprecedented crowds, was seen as crucial in consolidating TVK’s grassroots presence in western Tamil Nadu. Analysts compared the frenzy to the rallies of MG Ramachandran (MGR) in the 1970s, though Saturday’s tragedy highlighted the risks of such massive gatherings.
A Recurring Pattern of Rally Disasters
Tamil Nadu has witnessed similar tragedies before. In 2004, a surge at a Jayalalithaa rally in Kumbakonam left several injured. In 2019, a Jallikattu viewing stand collapse in Pudukottai killed three. Experts warn that personality-driven politics, common in the state, often leads to dangerously packed rallies without adequate professional event management.
Political sociologist A. Narayanan noted, “The cult of personality drives people to extremes. Event management in these contexts must be professional, not left to volunteers.”
Looking Ahead
The tragedy is expected to spark debates on rally regulations in Tamil Nadu, especially with celebrity-driven parties like TVK drawing tens of thousands. For Vijay, the incident poses a test of leadership and accountability as his movement grows.
A grieving mother in Karur, who lost her 12-year-old daughter, said through tears, “We came to see Vijay sir. We are taking back only silence.”
