Fatal Accident on NH-48
GURUGRAM :A horrific road accident on National Highway-48 in Gurugram early Saturday morning left five people dead and one critically injured after a Mahindra Thar lost control and crashed into a divider. The incident took place around 4:30 am near Exit 9, close to the Jharsa Flyover.
According to police officials, the SUV was carrying six passengers — three men and three women — who had traveled from Uttar Pradesh to Gurugram for work. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle was moving at high speed before it suddenly skidded and rammed into the divider.
Four occupants died instantly at the scene. Two others were rushed to Medanta Hospital, where one later succumbed to injuries. The lone surviving passenger remains in critical condition, undergoing treatment.
SUV Mangled Beyond Recognition
Visuals from the accident site highlighted the devastating impact of the collision. The Thar SUV was mangled beyond recognition, with wreckage and debris spread across more than 50 meters of the highway.
Emergency teams and local police reached the spot immediately after receiving distress calls. Sector-40 Station House Officer (SHO) Lalit confirmed that the accident was under investigation. Authorities are examining whether reckless driving, overspeeding, or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
Residents living near the highway described the scene as “chaotic and tragic,” with police cordoning off the area to manage traffic.
Spotlight on Rash Driving Cases
The Gurugram crash adds to growing concerns about rash driving incidents involving Mahindra Thar SUVs. In recent months, the vehicle has been linked to multiple fatal accidents.
Just last month, a biker in Delhi’s Moti Nagar was killed after being hit by a speeding Thar. Reports suggested alcohol was found inside the vehicle, further intensifying scrutiny of reckless behavior on city roads.
Road safety experts argue that the Thar’s powerful engine and off-road build make it prone to misuse by drivers indulging in overspeeding on urban highways. They emphasize the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and campaigns against drunk driving.
Police Investigation Underway
Police officials stated that CCTV footage from NH-48 is being reviewed to understand the sequence of events. Initial findings suggest that the vehicle was overspeeding before losing balance on the divider.
The SHO confirmed that a detailed postmortem examination would be conducted on the deceased, while efforts were being made to contact their families in Uttar Pradesh. The critical survivor’s statement, once possible, will also form part of the investigation.
Authorities urged commuters to drive responsibly and follow traffic rules, particularly on high-speed corridors like NH-48, which has witnessed several fatal accidents in the past year.
