Punjab Vigilance Bureau Cracks Down on Corruption
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Talwinder Singh, posted at Police Station-A Division in Amritsar, on bribery charges. Singh was caught red-handed while accepting a ₹5,000 bribe from a local complainant.
The arrest, made on September 19, 2025, reflects the state government’s ongoing drive to curb corruption in public service. According to officials, Singh had earlier demanded a larger sum from the complainant in exchange for returning confiscated property.
Complaint Leads to Vigilance Action
A resident of Amritsar filed the complaint against the ASI, alleging misconduct. The complainant explained that he managed a hotel against which the police had registered a case. During the operation, police seized mobile phones and a DVR system from the property.
When approached for the release of these items, the accused officer allegedly demanded a ₹50,000 bribe, later reducing the demand to ₹30,000. Singh initially accepted ₹16,000 as the first instalment and then insisted on receiving the balance in smaller payments.
Following verification of the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau organized a trap operation. In the presence of official witnesses, Singh was apprehended while accepting ₹5,000 as part of the second instalment.
Legal Action Under Prevention of Corruption Act
Officials confirmed that a case has been registered against Singh under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Police Station, Amritsar Range. The Vigilance Bureau stated that further investigation is ongoing to identify if others were involved.
A spokesperson said the bureau remains committed to its mission: “We will continue to take strong action against corrupt practices to uphold public trust.”
The arrest adds to a growing list of cases handled by Punjab’s anti-corruption unit this year, signaling the government’s intent to create transparent and accountable governance.
