RSS-backed ABVP wins Delhi University Students’ Union election, taking three key positions and displacing NSUI as president.

A day after students from DU colleges connected to the DUSU cast their ballots in the heavily guarded Delhi University Students’ Union election (DUSU election), in which the ABVP and NSUI were the front-runners, the vote counting process got underway on Friday morning.

NSUI leader Ronak Khatri will be replaced as DUSU president by ABVP member Aryan Maan.

-Winning candidates: Following all rounds of counting, Aryan Maan of the ABVP defeated Joslyn Nandita Choudhary of NSUI, his closest opponent, to win the position of president of DUSU. Rahul Jhansla was the only victor and was appointed vice president of the NSUI.

Aryan Maan was elected president with 28,841 votes.

Govind Tanwar, vice president, lost by 20,547 votes.

Kunal Chaudhary, secretary, received 23,779 votes and won.

Deepika Jha, joint secretary, received 21,825 votes and was elected.

Joslyn Nandita Choudhary, president, received 12,645 votes but lost.

Rahul Jhansla, vice president, won with 29,339 votes.

Secretary: Kabir Girsa, who lost with 16,117 votes

Lavkush Badhana, joint secretary, lost by 17,380 votes.

SFI-AISA: Anjali, an Indraprastha College for Women student, was proposed for president by the SFI-AISA combination. ABVP and the NSUI were the primary candidates in the triangular contest. Anjali ran on a platform of fee increases, gender sensitization, and the reinstatement of grievance redressal procedures. On every post, the SFI-AISA was lagging behind.

The results of the 2024 DUSU election showed that the ABVP won the vice-president’s office and kept the secretary position, while the NSUI ended a seven-year losing skid by winning the president and joint secretary positions. The NSUI has won the presidency twice in the last ten years, while the ABVP has dominated the race with six victories.

The first elections of the DUSU were held in 1954 after it was founded in 1949. DUSU produced a number of influential figures in Indian politics, including the late Arun Jaitley, Ajay Maken, Alka Lamba, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
