Delhi Police Crack Jain Festival Theft Case
The Delhi Police on Monday arrested a man accused of stealing a golden ‘kalash’ (urn) from a Jain religious festival at the Red Fort. The arrest came five days after the high-profile theft shocked devotees and raised questions over security at the historic site.
Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Devesh Srivastava confirmed that the accused, identified as Bhushan Verma, was arrested from Hapur in Uttar Pradesh. The suspect was traced by the Delhi Police crime branch using CCTV footage and local intelligence.
The urn, studded with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds, was valued at over ₹1 crore. According to officials, the accused disguised himself as a community member to blend into the religious gathering.
How the Theft Took Place
The stolen urn, weighing about 760 grams, was decorated with precious gems weighing an additional 115 grams. It had been part of daily rituals at the Jain community’s 10-day festival, held at the Red Fort grounds between August 28 and September 7.
On the day of the theft, the community had gathered for prayers. At around 9.20 am, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla arrived at the venue. Witnesses said the crowd’s attention turned toward him, and security personnel were also occupied with his visit.
When businessman Sudhir Kumar Jain, who had been bringing the urn from his home every day for prayers, began to pack up around 10.20 am, he realised the sacred object was missing. An e-FIR was immediately registered.
CCTV footage later revealed the suspect walking away from the stage with the urn. He was seen placing it inside a green and black cloth bag before leaving through the kitchen area.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The Delhi Police registered a case under Section 303 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for theft. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia said that multiple teams were deployed to track the suspect across Delhi and neighbouring states.
After analysing hours of surveillance footage and questioning locals, the crime branch traced Verma to Hapur. Officers confirmed that he had attempted to sell the urn discreetly but failed due to its unique design and high-profile media coverage.
Police sources said the accused has a history of petty crimes but had never been linked to such a high-value theft before. The recovered urn is now back in safe custody.
Community Reaction and Significance
The Jain community expressed both relief and concern after the urn was recovered. Many devotees highlighted the object’s cultural and religious significance, stating that it had been part of rituals for decades.
Sudhir Kumar Jain, the complainant, said the urn had been in his family since his father’s time. “We carried it every day for prayers. Its theft was not just a loss of property but an emotional wound for the community,” he said.
Community leaders also urged authorities to strengthen security arrangements for religious gatherings at public venues.
Security Concerns at Historic Sites
The incident has reignited concerns about security management at major heritage sites. Despite police deployment outside the festival venue, the theft went unnoticed for nearly an hour.
Officials acknowledged that the sudden distraction caused by the Lok Sabha Speaker’s visit may have created an opportunity for the theft. However, they assured that lapses would be reviewed, and stronger measures will be implemented for future events.
Experts said the case highlights the need for better surveillance systems, stricter access control, and heightened vigilance during high-profile gatherings.

The swift arrest and recovery of the golden urn have been praised as an example of effective coordination between crime branch teams and district police. However, the case also underscores the challenges of ensuring security during large public events.
As Delhi continues to host major religious and cultural festivals, the police are expected to conduct a review of security protocols to prevent similar incidents.
