Supreme Court Rejects Extension for Bihar Electoral Roll Revision
New Delhi/Bihar, September 1: The Supreme Court of India on Monday refused to grant an extension for the Special Summary Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The bench, led by Justice Surya Kant, highlighted a growing trust deficit between the Election Commission of India (ECI) and political parties regarding the revision process.
The decision came after the ECI informed the court that claims and objections from voters can still be submitted after the preparation of the electoral roll and until nomination filing closes. The court emphasized that all stakeholders must ensure maximum voter participation in the revision process.
Volunteers Deployed to Assist Voters
The Supreme Court directed the Bihar Legal Services Authority to deploy volunteers across the state to help citizens submit their claims and objections efficiently. This move aims to ensure that voters are not left out due to lack of awareness or procedural hurdles.
Justice Kant also flagged concerns over the low number of claims and objections filed so far. Addressing political parties, the bench urged: “Please tell your party to activate itself,” stressing the importance of proactive involvement by all political outfits in the electoral exercise.
Trust Deficit Between Parties and Election Commission
The bench acknowledged that political mistrust has affected the electoral process in Bihar. Many parties have expressed reservations over the timing and procedures of the SIR, which the court described as a critical exercise for free and fair elections.
The Supreme Court’s order is expected to prompt parties to mobilize their volunteers, ensuring that voters who are newly eligible or have shifted residences can register or update their details in the electoral rolls.
