IMD Forecasts Showers Across Delhi-NCR
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan today. According to the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC), showers may be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas.
In Delhi, localities like Dwarka, Palam, IGI Airport, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, Chhattarpur, and Mehrauli are likely to receive rain. The forecast also covers parts of Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ballabhgarh.
RWFC officials mentioned gusty winds of 30–40 km/h may accompany thunderstorms in Ayanagar, Deramandi, Rohtak, Rewari, and Jhajjar.
Weather Outlook for Thursday
The IMD said Delhi will experience a generally cloudy sky, with showers limited to certain areas. The day’s maximum temperature is expected at 32°C, while the minimum will hover around 24°C.
Officials added that light to moderate rainfall may occur in nearby states, including western Uttar Pradesh towns like Pahasu, Debai, Narora, Gabhana, and Atrauli. Parts of eastern Rajasthan such as Tizara and Khairthal may also witness similar conditions.
The forecast also highlighted isolated spells in Dholpur, Mattanhail, Farukhnagar, and Bawal. The weather agency has not issued any weather alert for today.
Yamuna River Crosses Danger Mark
Meanwhile, the Yamuna River crossed the danger level at Delhi’s Old Railway Bridge on Wednesday evening. The water level reached 205.35 metres, fueled by heavy discharge from Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages.
Authorities have been put on alert, and officials are closely monitoring the situation to plan evacuations if water levels rise further. Local residents near low-lying riverbanks have been advised to remain vigilant.
Extended Rainfall Predictions for North India
The IMD also issued an extended forecast covering several northern states. Rainfall activity is expected to reduce in Jammu and Kashmir from today, but isolated heavy spells may continue in parts of Northwest India for the next week.
Key predictions include:
- Uttarakhand: Isolated very heavy rainfall on August 28, 29, and September 1–2.
- Himachal Pradesh and East Rajasthan: Moderate to heavy rainfall expected over the next seven days.
- Haryana and Punjab: Intermittent heavy showers between August 30 and September 1.
- West Rajasthan: Likely heavy rainfall from August 29 to 31.
- Uttar Pradesh: Isolated heavy showers on September 1–2.
The IMD warned that light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely across most of northwest India throughout the week.
Caution for Residents
Authorities have urged people in vulnerable areas to take precautions against waterlogging, lightning, and gusty winds. Residents near the Yamuna floodplains and low-lying villages have been advised to stay alert to avoid emergencies.
Tourists visiting hilly regions like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have also been asked to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain spells.
