Cheteshwar Pujara Bids Farewell to Cricket

New Delhi, Aug 24: Cheteshwar Pujara, often hailed as the “Wall” of modern Indian Test cricket, has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The 37-year-old shared an emotional note on social media on Sunday, bringing an end to a career spanning more than a decade.

The Saurashtra-born batter played his final Test in 2023, finishing with 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, including 19 centuries and 35 fifties. He also amassed more than 21,000 first-class runs, making him one of the most prolific red-ball cricketers of his era.

Pujara’s decision follows a wave of recent retirements, with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R. Ashwin stepping away from Test cricket earlier this year.

A Career Rooted in Grit and Patience

Pujara rose to prominence after the retirement of Rahul Dravid, filling India’s need for a reliable No. 3 batter. His trademark style was built on patience, resilience, and the ability to tire out world-class attacks.

His defining moments came during India’s back-to-back Test series victories in Australia in 2018–19 and 2020–21. Facing hostile pace attacks, he absorbed pressure and laid the foundation for historic triumphs.

Saurashtra Cricket Association president Jaydev Shah, under whose captaincy Pujara made his first-class debut, called him a “legend of Indian and Saurashtra cricket.” Shah praised his dedication and credited his father, Arvind Pujara, for shaping his career.

Domestic Stalwart and Humble Icon

Even after being sidelined from the Indian team post-2023, Pujara continued piling up runs in domestic cricket with remarkable determination. Saurashtra coach Niraj Odedra described him as “training like an 18-year-old” while chasing a comeback.

In addition to his batting exploits, Pujara briefly ventured into commentary, being part of the broadcast team during the recent India-England series in the UK.

Despite his quiet demeanor, Pujara remained a respected figure in the dressing room and beyond. His humility shone through in his farewell note, where he thanked the BCCI, Saurashtra Cricket Association, teammates, mentors, and fans.

An Era Ends, A Legacy Remains

Pujara’s retirement closes a significant chapter in Indian cricket. Alongside his contemporary Ravindra Jadeja, he remains one of Saurashtra’s greatest cricketing exports.

Known for his calm presence and unmatched discipline, Pujara will be remembered as the backbone of India’s Test success in the 2010s. His contribution went beyond runs—he embodied the value of grit, perseverance, and quiet determination.

As India transitions into a new generation of red-ball specialists, Pujara’s career stands as a reminder that Test cricket still thrives on resilience and patience.
