- “No Good Work Ever Fails,” says Mohit Suri on Awarapan
Director Mohit Suri, one of Bollywood’s most consistent filmmakers over the past two decades, is known for crafting emotional, music-driven films that connect deeply with audiences. From thrillers like Zeher and Murder 2 to romantic blockbusters like Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain, his filmography spans genres. But for many fans, Awarapan (2007), starring Emraan Hashmi, remains his most impactful work—even though it underperformed at the box office at the time.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Mohit opened up about the film’s legacy and why he never saw it as a failure. “Nothing fails,” he said. “Today, we’re talking about it while a sequel is being made. No good work ever fails. I went out to make a good film, not a hit film.”

While he admits that commercial success is important in the film industry, Mohit says true validation comes from creating meaningful cinema. “Everyone has some form of validation they seek. For me, it’s about making a film that people love. Numbers will come and go. A good film stays with people much longer.”
That said, he recognizes the practical value of box office success. “Yes, a hit helps you get more work. It gives you the opportunity to make your next film. And I absolutely love what I do.”

Reflecting on some of his recent films that didn’t connect with audiences, Mohit admits there was a time when he got too focused on chasing box office milestones. He recalls a candid conversation with fellow filmmaker Tushar Hiranandani, who told him, “I miss the Mohit of Aashiqui 2—the one who made films just for the fun of it.”
Mohit says that moment stuck with him. “He was right. I was chasing a number, and I don’t want to do that anymore.”

Mohit Suri is now gearing up for his return to the romance genre with Saiyaara, produced by Yash Raj Films. The film stars newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda and marks a fresh start for the director. Scheduled to hit theatres on 18 July, Saiyaara is expected to blend Mohit’s signature emotional storytelling with a new-age romantic narrative.
