Dalai Lama’s 90th Birthday Celebration in Dharamshala: Message of Peace, Presence of Global Dignitaries

Dalai Lama’s 90th Birthday Marked by Global Celebrations and Call for Compassion in Dharamshala

Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh | July 5, 2025 — In an emotionally resonant and spiritually uplifting celebration, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama marked his 90th birthday in the serene hill town of Dharamshala, drawing religious followers, international dignitaries, Indian officials, and global well-wishers. The Tibetan spiritual leader delivered a powerful message focused on peace, compassion, and interfaith harmony, while reiterating his views on the succession process—a topic that continues to draw geopolitical attention.

Celebrations Mark a Milestone in Global Spiritual Leadership

The day-long celebration, held at the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the main Tibetan temple in Dharamshala, was a confluence of traditional Tibetan culture, spiritual teachings, and messages of unity. Buddhist monks, Tibetan youth, cultural troupes, and foreign dignitaries gathered to pay homage to a man often described as the world’s most revered spiritual figure.

The event began with traditional “Mandala offerings”, followed by a cultural presentation by Tibetan school children and an offering of the ‘Long Life Prayer’ (Tenshug) by senior Tibetan clergy.

Dalai Lama’s Message: “Compassion is the Only Way Forward”

In his speech delivered in Tibetan (with simultaneous translation), the Dalai Lama, seated in his characteristic saffron and maroon robes, emphasized the need for universal responsibility and compassion in an increasingly divided world.

“Even as the world changes, the essence of humanity must remain rooted in compassion and understanding,” he said.
“Peace cannot be achieved through violence or ideology—it must be cultivated through the heart.”

He also touched on inter-religious harmony, climate responsibility, and the importance of inner transformation as tools for building a better future. The 90-year-old leader looked frail but mentally sharp, often smiling and responding affectionately to children and elders alike.

Succession Talk: A Reaffirmation of Spiritual Process

While not the central focus of the event, the Dalai Lama briefly addressed the issue of his succession, stating:

“The tradition of reincarnation is sacred to Tibetan Buddhism. When the time comes, I will offer guidance on how my reincarnation should be discovered—based on spiritual wisdom, not political motives.”

This statement served as a pointed reminder to China, which claims the right to approve the Dalai Lama’s successor. India, the US, and several global religious freedom advocates have dismissed China’s claims, reinforcing the spiritual and traditional nature of the succession.

Who Attended the 90th Birthday Celebrations?

The celebrations saw the participation of a distinguished array of international and Indian dignitaries:

  • Penpa Tsering, President of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile
  • Tenzin Lekshay, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) spokesperson
  • US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, Robert Destro
  • Delegates from the European Parliament’s Tibet Interest Group
  • Japanese and Mongolian Buddhist leaders
  • Indian spiritual leaders including Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Swami Avdheshanand Giri

Indian political leaders from across party lines, including Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, also attended the event and reaffirmed India’s commitment to Tibetan cultural and spiritual freedom.

Historical Context: Nine Decades of Global Influence

Born Tenzin Gyatso in 1935, the Dalai Lama was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at age two. He fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule and has since lived in exile in India. Over the years, he has become a global symbol of nonviolence, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and inspiring millions across cultures and faiths.

Although his official birthday is July 6, the main celebrations started earlier—on June 30 and continued today—to honor the Buddhist lunar tradition
