UP Woman Files Complaint Over Instagram Follower Loss Due to Housework

In an unusual turn of events in Uttar Pradesh, a woman filed a police complaint against her husband, claiming she lost Instagram followers because he made her do household chores. The incident, which unfolded in Hapur district, has sparked widespread discussion on the growing influence of social media on modern relationships.

The Backstory: Instagram Over Domestic Duties

The complainant, identified as Nisha from Hapur, alleged that her husband Vijendra, a resident of Noida, repeatedly pressured her to cut down on her Instagram activity and focus more on domestic responsibilities like washing utensils and cleaning the house.

Nisha, who claimed to be an active content creator, told the police that she typically posted two Reels daily. However, following her husband’s demands to reduce time on social media, her follower count dropped by two, prompting her to leave the matrimonial home and return to her parents’ house in Pilkhuwa, Hapur.

“My followers declined as I was kept busy with housework by my husband. I didn’t get time to make Reels,” she stated in her complaint, according to a report by Deccan Herald.

Husband Retaliates with His Own Complaint

Vijendra, in response, also lodged a complaint, claiming that Nisha was constantly glued to her phone, prioritizing Instagram content creation over household duties. According to his version, the couple had frequent arguments about how much time she spent on social media instead of maintaining the house or focusing on their married life.

Police Mediation and Resolution

The case was handled by Aruna Rai, in-charge at the Women’s Police Station in Hapur, who mediated between the two parties for nearly four hours. After counselling, the couple acknowledged their respective roles in the conflict and agreed to work on their marriage, vowing to restore harmony in their relationship.

Police officials refrained from taking legal action, emphasizing the importance of communication and mutual understanding in resolving domestic issues, especially those arising from digital distractions.

The Bigger Picture: When Social Media Affects Marital Life

This incident shines a light on the increasing influence of social media in personal relationships, particularly marriages. While platforms like Instagram offer an outlet for creativity, fame, and even income for some, they can also lead to emotional distress, insecurity, and conflict when boundaries are not clearly established.

According to a 2023 Pew Research Center study, 35% of young Indian couples admitted that social media causes friction in their relationships, with disagreements often rooted in time spent online, content shared, and lack of attention toward family responsibilities.

Expert Opinions on Digital Balance

Psychologists and family counsellors recommend:

  • Setting boundaries on screen time.
  • Maintaining a shared schedule for household duties.
  • Keeping open communication about digital priorities.
  • Understanding that online validation should not supersede personal connections.
