UP Woman Poisons Husband, Throws Body in River With Lover in Siddharthnagar Murder
In a gruesome crime , a woman in Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband with the help of her lover. The accused then dumped the body into the Rapti river, attempting to conceal the crime as a case of disappearance.
Premeditated Murder Unfolds in Balrampur
The chilling events unfolded on June 2, when 35-year-old Sangeeta Devi laced prasad with poison and fed it to her husband Kannan Kumar (48) during a visit to Vibhuti Nath temple in Shravasti. On their way back, accompanied by her 27-year-old lover Anil Shukla alias Vivek, an unconscious Kannan was pushed off a 25-foot bridge near Kodari in Balrampur.
Sangeeta and Kannan had been married for 18 years and shared a 12-year-old son. Despite the long-standing marriage, Sangeeta had been secretly involved in a romantic relationship with Anil, which began about five years ago during a train journey.
The Disappearance and Initial Investigation
On June 5, Sangeeta filed a missing person complaint at Dhebarua police station, claiming ignorance of her husband’s whereabouts. Interestingly, she and Anil were reportedly seen together over the following three days, raising suspicions.
The couple’s mobile location data from June 2 did not align with Sangeeta’s statements, prompting further scrutiny. Police confirmed that both Sangeeta and Kannan were together near the bridge area on the day of the incident.
Adding weight to the suspicion, Kannan’s brother, Babu Lal, also filed a separate complaint, citing potential foul play in the couple’s strained relationship. According to police sources, their 12-year-old son told investigators that only his mother returned home after the temple visit, though all three had left together.
Confession and Arrest
Faced with inconsistencies in her statements and digital surveillance evidence, Sangeeta eventually broke down during interrogation and confessed to poisoning her husband and pushing him into the river with Anil’s help.
The body was recovered in skeletal condition on June 10, about 1.5 kilometers downstream from the Kodari bridge. Identification was made based on clothing, police confirmed.
According to Circle Officer Sujeet Rai, who led the investigation, the murder was pre-planned. Sangeeta and Anil had developed a deep relationship over the years. Though Kannan had once confronted her about the affair, she dismissed it as mere friendship. Locals added that Kannan had brought Sangeeta home after a love marriage and earned a living through fish farming.
A Love Affair Turned Fatal
Police reports suggest Anil frequently visited Sangeeta’s home, and their closeness was well known in the locality. As the affair intensified, Kannan’s presence became an obstacle, leading the lovers to plot his elimination.
During interrogation, Sangeeta revealed the entire sequence of events: how she and Anil lured Kannan to the temple, served him poisoned prasad, and later threw his unconscious body into the Rapti river to fake an accidental disappearance.
Both Sangeeta and Anil have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
