In a shocking case of domestic violence rooted in patriarchal coercion, a 65-year-old ex-Army man allegedly shot and killed his widowed daughter-in-law in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district after she refused to remarry within the family. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and raised fresh concerns over women’s safety and autonomy, especially among widows in rural India.
Victim Identified as 38-Year-Old Priyanka
The victim, identified as Priyanka (38), lost her husband a year ago. According to her family members and police reports, she had been under mounting pressure from her father-in-law, Gyan Singh Gurjar, to remarry one of his relatives. Upon her persistent refusal, Gurjar allegedly took the extreme step.
The incident occurred at around 10 PM on Wednesday, June 12, in the Civil Lines area of Morena, according to Civil Lines police station in-charge Darshan Lal Shukla.
“Priyanka was shot with a country-made firearm. The accused is on the run and a manhunt is underway,” Shukla confirmed.
Accused on the Run; Police Launch Manhunt
Gurjar, a retired soldier, is absconding, and police have formed multiple teams to track him down. Preliminary investigation suggests that the motive behind the murder was Priyanka’s resistance to remarrying someone within the family — a demand imposed on her by her father-in-law, allegedly to “preserve family honour.”
Police have registered a murder case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and have intensified efforts to apprehend the accused.
A Grim Reminder of Deep-Rooted Patriarchy
The murder has stirred public sentiment and sparked renewed debates around patriarchal control, women’s rights, and widowhood stigma in parts of rural India. Social activists point to the systemic pressures widowed women face, often being coerced into remarriage for reasons ranging from property control to family honour.
“This is not just a criminal act; it’s a reflection of deep-rooted societal norms that treat women as possessions,” said women’s rights activist Renu Tiwari.
Experts argue that cases like these highlight the urgent need for more robust legal and social frameworks that empower widows, protect their choices, and prevent forced remarriage — an issue that still plagues many Indian families.
Neighbours and Family in Shock
Neighbours and relatives were horrified at the brutality of the act. Priyanka was described as a quiet, respectful woman who was trying to rebuild her life after the loss of her husband.
“She wanted to live independently and had expressed her desire to remain unmarried. But the family kept pressuring her,” said one of her cousins.
The family has called for strict punishment for Gurjar and expressed fear over his potential return if not swiftly arrested.
Legal and Political Repercussions
The incident has caught the attention of local lawmakers and women’s commissions. The Madhya Pradesh Women’s Commission has taken cognizance and is expected to seek a report from the district administration.
Meanwhile, local MLA Rajendra Sharma condemned the act, stating, “This is an inhuman crime. Law must come down heavily on those who think they can control women’s lives through violence.”
