US Vetoes UN Gaza Ceasefire Resolution Over Lack of Hamas Condemnation
In a controversial move that drew global attention, the United States on Wednesday vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire” in Gaza, becoming the lone dissenting voice against 14 member states. The veto came amid growing international concern over Gaza’s worsening humanitarian crisis and mounting civilian casualties.
The draft resolution, tabled in response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” citing mass displacement, famine threats, and restricted aid access. Despite overwhelming international support, the resolution failed to pass due to the US veto.
US Says Resolution Ignores Hamas’ October 7 Attack and Disarmament
Acting US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea defended the decision before the Council, stating that the draft resolution did not meet key US demands. She emphasized that the proposal:
- Failed to condemn Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which sparked the ongoing war.
- Did not require Hamas to disarm or withdraw from Gaza.
- Was not tied to the release of Israeli hostages, still held by Hamas.
“The United States has been clear: We would not support any measure that fails to condemn Hamas and does not call for Hamas to disarm and leave Gaza,” Shea said, according to Reuters.
The US argued that approving the resolution without addressing these conditions would have undermined ongoing diplomatic efforts and potentially emboldened Hamas.
Gaza’s Crisis Deepens as Offensive Resumes
The vote occurred just as Israel resumed its offensive against Hamas following the collapse of a temporary truce in March. According to Gaza health authorities, 45 Palestinians were killed on Wednesday due to Israeli airstrikes, while the Israeli military confirmed the death of one of its soldiers in renewed fighting.
Humanitarian groups warn that over 2 million civilians in Gaza are now facing dire conditions. Food, water, and medical supplies are critically low, and humanitarian aid has only trickled in after Israel faced intense global pressure to lift its 11-week blockade on the enclave.
Hamas, UN Members React Strongly to Veto
The veto drew immediate criticism from Hamas, which accused the US of “blind bias” toward Israel. The group condemned Washington’s decision, stating that it blocked a humanitarian lifeline for millions of Palestinians.
Meanwhile, other members of the Security Council, including France, China, and Russia, voiced deep disappointment over the US action. Diplomats and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly stressed the urgency of halting hostilities to prevent further civilian deaths and displacement.
US Reiterates Support for Conditional Ceasefire
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the administration’s stance, stating:
“Hamas could end this brutal conflict immediately by laying down its arms and releasing all remaining hostages.”
Rubio emphasized that the Biden administration continues to push for a ceasefire, but only under conditions that include the release of hostages and Hamas’ disarmament.
The US has maintained that it is actively engaged in backchannel diplomacy to broker a more sustainable peace deal, but critics argue that the veto has weakened the global call for an end to the violence.
Israel Firm on Rejecting Permanent Ceasefire
Israel, for its part, has firmly rejected all calls for a permanent or unconditional ceasefire, stating that such a move would allow Hamas to regroup and retain power in Gaza. Israeli officials insist that the complete dismantling of Hamas’ military and governance structures is essential for lasting peace.
