In the aftermath of the recent terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Punjab Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO has issued a strong condemnation, calling the incident “barbaric and cowardly.” The assault, reportedly the first of its kind targeting non-local tourists in the picturesque region of South Kashmir, has sent shockwaves across the nation.
Speaking from Chandigarh on April 23, the minister expressed deep anguish over the violence, highlighting the alarming nexus between terrorists, gangsters, and anti-social elements who, he said, are working together to destabilize peace and communal harmony in sensitive areas like Kashmir.
Punjab Government Steps In to Support Tourists
Addressing media concerns, Harbhajan Singh ETO confirmed that the Punjab Government has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of tourists from the state who were present in Kashmir during the attack. Officials are working closely with local authorities in Jammu and Kashmir to track, assist, and safely return all affected tourists.
“Every effort is being made to bring back our people safely,” said the minister. “We are in constant touch with local administration and will ensure no one is left behind.”
This assurance comes amid reports that several families from Punjab were on holiday in Kashmir and faced travel disruptions due to the security situation.
“Terrorism Has No Religion,” Says ETO
Reiterating a powerful message, Harbhajan Singh ETO stated unequivocally that terrorism has no religion, and that no faith endorses the killing of innocents. He urged citizens across the country to resist falling prey to divisive narratives, emphasizing unity and calm in times of crisis.
“Such acts are not only cowardly but in direct opposition to every moral and spiritual teaching,” he said. “These are attacks not just on people, but on peace and humanity.”
Punjab Police on High Alert in Border Areas
Recognizing the strategic position of Punjab, particularly in border districts, the minister acknowledged the vital role of Punjab Police in maintaining law and order. He referred to the police force as “the second line of defence,” especially in areas vulnerable to infiltration or radical influence.
The Punjab Police have been placed on alert, especially around transit points and railway stations, in case emergency transportation for returning tourists becomes necessary.
Call for Central Government Action
Harbhajan Singh ETO didn’t mince words in calling upon the Union Government to take strong and swift action against those responsible for the Pahalgam attack. He emphasized that the Centre must intensify its counter-terrorism efforts and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice without delay.
“This is a time for decisive leadership. The government must send a clear message that such acts will be met with zero tolerance,” he asserted.
The minister’s statement reflects the growing public demand for accountability and a stronger national security posture following repeated incidents of violence in Jammu and Kashmir.
