India’s Business Growth Hits 8-Month High, Driven by Export Orders Surge

India’s business landscape is showing strong signs of recovery, with the country’s private sector activity reaching an 8-month high in April 2025. According to the HSBC Flash India Composite PMI, compiled by S&P Global, business growth has surged, largely due to a remarkable rise in export orders for manufactured goods. The PMI increased to 60.0, rising from 59.5 in March, indicating the most significant growth in both manufacturing and services since last August.

A major driver of this growth is the manufacturing sector, which saw a substantial uptick, reaching its highest level in over a year with a Manufacturing PMI of 58.4. This strong performance was driven by heightened demand, an influx of new orders, and a significant increase in production.
Notably, the surge in export orders was the most significant since 2014, partly attributed to a 90-day delay in U.S. tariffs, which offered Indian exporters a window to boost shipments. This policy shift, initiated under President Donald Trump, has played a crucial role in propelling India’s export-driven sectors.

The services sector further bolstered the positive trend, as its PMI reached a four-month peak of 59.1. While growth in services is continuing at a steady pace, it lagged behind manufacturing in terms of expansion. Nevertheless, the sector remains vital to India’s overall economic health, with sustained activity despite global uncertainties.

On the employment front, India’s manufacturing sector has shown impressive job creation. In fact, employment levels within manufacturing reached their highest since the survey began in 2005, reflecting the sector’s growing strength and resilience. Firms are not just expanding their output but also creating jobs at a significant pace, signaling an optimistic outlook in a key area of the economy.

However, there are concerns about business confidence. Although there has been general positive growth, the index for business expectations has fallen to its lowest point in eight months. This suggests that while businesses are experiencing short-term success, they are cautious about the future, especially in the services sector, which remains more vulnerable to external pressures.

The road ahead for India’s economy will depend on how it navigates global challenges and internal economic policies. While the present data is promising, businesses are bracing for potential headwinds, keeping a careful eye on upcoming policy decisions and global market trends. As things stand, India’s growth story continues to unfold, but its trajectory will require continued vigilance
