Punjab’s ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ Campaign Empowers Students as Anti-Drug Ambassadors
Patiala, April 23, 2025 – In a significant stride towards combating drug abuse, Punjab’s Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Balbir Singh, has announced that students leading anti-drug initiatives will be honored as “Real Heroes” and appointed as ambassadors in the state’s intensified anti-drug campaign, ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’.
Empowering the Youth in the Fight Against Drugs
Addressing a gathering of over 10,000 participants at the Polo Ground in Patiala, Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized the pivotal role of students in the state’s battle against substance abuse. He urged them to not only abstain from drugs but also to actively engage in spreading awareness among their peers about the detrimental effects of drug use. “Our students are our heroes; they must pledge to never fall prey to addiction and become role models for others,” he stated.
The Health Minister highlighted that the state government would recognize and honor these student ambassadors at both district and state levels, reinforcing their commitment to a drug-free Punjab.
‘War Against Drugs’ Marathon: A Unified Stand
The announcement coincided with the launch of the ‘War Against Drugs’ marathon, organized by the Patiala District Administration under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Dr. Preeti Yadav and SSP Dr. Nanak Singh. The marathon, which saw enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, social workers, and residents, commenced at Polo Ground and traversed key locations including YPS Chowk, Thikriwal, Fuhara Chowk, Leela Bhawan, Baradari, Sheranwala Gate, and Phul Cinema, concluding back at Polo Ground via Modi College Chowk.
The event also featured an anti-drug oath administered to all participants and a powerful performance by the National Theatre Arts Society (NTAS), led by Padma Shri Pran Sabharwal, highlighting the perils of drug abuse.
A Comprehensive Approach to Drug Prevention
The ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign, launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, adopts a multifaceted approach to eradicate drug abuse in Punjab. This includes stringent law enforcement, rehabilitation programs, and educational initiatives. The state government has established over 500 Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) clinics, 36 treatment centers, and 19 rehabilitation centers to provide support to individuals battling addiction .
Furthermore, the Punjab Police has collaborated with Punjabi University Patiala and the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC) to introduce a comprehensive 10-hour anti-drug awareness course in schools and identified drug hotspots across the state. This course, designed to be engaging and informative, includes lectures, audio-visual content, and interactive sessions covering all aspects of drug abuse prevention .

Dr. Balbir Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to making Punjab drug-free and urged the cooperation of all sections of society in this mission. He emphasized that the fight against drugs is not just a government initiative but a collective responsibility that requires active participation from every individual.

With continued efforts and community support, the state aims to build a future where the youth are empowered, educated, and free from the shackles of drug abuse.
