OpenAI Sets New Pay Records: $1.5M Average Equity Per Employee

Inside OpenAI’s Strategy to Attract and Retain Elite AI Talent

by Desk

OpenAI now offers $1.5M average stock rewards per employee amid global AI talent war, setting new Silicon Valley compensation records.

OpenAI has discreetly changed how entrepreneurs compensate their employees. The artificial intelligence corporation is now providing stock-based rewards that average almost $1.5 million per employee, according to data published by The Wall Street Journal. With almost 4,000 employees, this kind of pay is practically unprecedented in the history of technology. OpenAI’s dividends are significantly higher than those of previous industry titans prior to their IPO.

The figures demonstrate how fierce and costly the worldwide competition for the best AI expertise has grown.

Compensation for OpenAI Workers Sets New Silicon Valley Record

OpenAI’s employee remuneration scale is unheard of prior to an IPO. Google’s stock-based compensation was more than seven times lower than what OpenAI currently gives when it was getting ready to go public in 2003. OpenAI’s average rewards are around 34 times greater than what employees at 18 significant tech companies got prior to their initial public offerings (IPOs), according to an analysis using Equilar data.

This tactic is not a coincidence. Large equity compensation are being used by OpenAI to retain highly skilled engineers and researchers, who are in very limited supply. Several workers are already among Silicon Valley’s wealthiest people.

But there are drawbacks to these benefits as well. Operating losses are increasing due to rising compensation costs, which also dilute current shareholders. According to investor filings, stock-based compensation may increase to $3 billion annually through 2030, which would account for almost half of OpenAI’s 2025 revenue.

The AI Talent War Forces OpenAI to Increase Equity Distributions

This summer was the height of the AI talent war. According to reports, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, offered salary packages of hundreds of millions of dollars, and in exceptional instances, nearly $1 billion, to a select group of AI researchers and executives. More than 20 workers, including Shengjia Zhao, co-creator of ChatGPT, were lured away from OpenAI by these incentives.

Some research and engineering employees received one-time bonuses from OpenAI, some of which totaled millions of dollars, in an effort to curb the departures. To further boost take-home pay, the corporation also eliminated a requirement requiring workers to remain for six months prior to the vetting of their equity.

Compensation is still striking at the senior level. Sam Altman, the company’s founder, just revealed a new senior position called Head of Preparedness, which comes with equity and $555,000 annually. The work focuses on maintaining technological security while controlling dangers from quickly developing AI systems.
