Meta will end support for Messenger desktop apps on Mac and Windows by December 15, 2025. Users will be redirected to Facebook.com or Messenger.com. Enable Safe Storage to keep chats secure.

Meta has said that the standalone Messenger desktop programs for Mac and Windows will no longer be available after December 15, 2025. Instead of being able to log in and use the app, users will be sent to Facebook’s website (which is a more aggressive step we’ve seen on Android) to send and receive messages.

The Messenger Desktop App Will No Longer Be Available

The Messenger app for Mac is being phased down, according to a support page. You won’t be able to log into this app after it is no longer supported. Instead, you’ll be sent to the Facebook website to send messages.

TechCrunch confirmed with Meta that they would also stop supporting Windows, even though Meta was only talking about its Mac app at first.

If you use Messenger on your computer, Meta will soon send you an in-app notification letting you know that it is going to be phased out. Users should keep using it for 60 days after the announcement, and then Meta says they should take it off their phones because it doesn’t work anymore.

What Happens to Your Chat History

Most people are most worried about their message history. The good news is that your chats won’t go away if you turn on safe storage before the app stops working. This will keep all of your encrypted messages safe and let you read them when you use WhatsApp on the web.

How to find out if secure storage is turned on:

1. Open Messenger and click the gear icon at the top of your profile image.

2. Click on End-to-end encrypted chats under Privacy & Safety.

3. Choose Message storage and make sure Turn on safe storage is checked.

4. Set a PIN to keep your conversation history safe.

You are safe even if you have Messenger but not a Facebook account. You may keep talking by going into Messenger.com. You don’t need a Facebook account.

In other words, Meta is finally getting rid of the Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac by December 15. This will force people to go to the Facebook site or Messenger.com. Make sure that secure storage is turned on before then to keep your chats safe.
