Maruti Suzuki Escudo SUV to Launch During Festive Season

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to expand its SUV portfolio with an all-new model named the Escudo, expected to launch during the upcoming festive season. The company, known for its dominance in the small car segment, has recently gained momentum in the SUV category with the success of the Brezza and Grand Vitara. The Escudo is set to build on that success.

Trademark applications for “Escudo” and “Torqnado” filed last year hint that the company is gearing up to add more utility-focused products. Interestingly, the name “Escudo” is already used internationally for the Suzuki Vitara in markets like Japan. However, the Indian version is likely to be a completely new compact SUV tailored for domestic preferences.

Positioning and Platform: Between Brezza and Grand Vitara

The Maruti Suzuki Escudo SUV is expected to slot between the Brezza and Grand Vitara, making it a strategic mid-tier option for Indian consumers. Reports suggest that it will be based on Suzuki’s Global C platform, the same architecture that underpins the Grand Vitara. However, the Escudo may feature a slightly longer wheelbase, offering better cabin space and comfort.

The compact SUV is expected to be marketed through Maruti Suzuki’s Arena dealerships, unlike the Grand Vitara, which is sold via the Nexa channel. This move signals the brand’s intent to make premium features more accessible to mainstream customers.

Feature Expectations: Tech-Laden Interior

The interior of the Escudo SUV is expected to come loaded with a wide range of premium features. A redesigned dashboard is likely to host a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.

A fully digital instrument cluster, ventilated seats, and a sunroof could also feature in the top trims, bringing it in line with customer expectations in the compact SUV segment. These additions aim to improve the driving experience, particularly for young urban buyers.

Powertrain Options: Petrol, CNG, and Mild-Hybrid Tech

Under the hood, the Escudo is likely to feature a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Maruti is expected to equip the vehicle with its mild-hybrid system, already seen in the Ertiga and Grand Vitara.

Given the rising demand for cleaner fuel options, a CNG variant may also be offered. Transmission choices could include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. This variety ensures that the SUV caters to both performance-focused drivers and fuel-efficiency seekers.

Safety Features: Focus on Passenger Protection

In terms of safety, Maruti Suzuki is likely to equip the Escudo SUV with six airbags, ABS with EBD, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard.

Higher trims could receive advanced driver-assist features like a 360-degree surround-view camera, hill-hold assist, and possibly rear cross-traffic alert. These features would enhance the vehicle’s appeal to safety-conscious buyers.

Competition: Ready to Take on the Creta and Seltos

Once launched, the Maruti Suzuki Escudo SUV will compete in the hotly contested mid-size SUV segment. Rivals include the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor, and Honda Elevate.

With strong brand loyalty, expansive service networks, and aggressive pricing, Maruti Suzuki is poised to make a serious dent in this space.

Launch Timeline: All Eyes on Festive Season 2025

While Maruti Suzuki has not officially confirmed the launch date, multiple sources indicate that the Escudo will hit the market during the 2025 festive season. This strategic timing aligns with heightened car buying sentiment and could give the SUV a strong sales start.

Enthusiasts and potential buyers can expect teaser campaigns and feature reveals in the coming months.
