A new regulation for applications like WhatsApp and Signal has been introduced by the Department of Telecommunications of the Government of India. It is known as required SIM binding. This implies that the SIM card used for registration must be present and active on the phone in order for these apps to function.
The app must terminate if the SIM is not present in the device or is not active. The government took this action because some users were using these programs without a SIM card, which led to online fraud and cybersecurity issues.
Rules for SIM Binding on WhatsApp and Other Chat Apps
Apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Arattai, Snapchat, ShareChat, and JioChat are required by the new SIM binding regulations to constantly verify that the same registered SIM card is still present on the mobile device.
There must never be a pause in the checking. The app must terminate instantly if the registered SIM card is taken out or if a different SIM card is used.

The Telecommunications Act, 2023, the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, and other laws will all be strictly enforced against these apps, the Department of Telecommunications says.

How WhatsApp Web and Other Web Versions Are Affected by SIM Binding Rules
These apps’ web versions are likewise subject to the regulations. According to the department, these services have to automatically log customers out every six hours. For instance, in order to continue using WhatsApp Web on a laptop or PC, users will need to log in again every six hours.
The government claims that because cybercriminals were using non-SIM usage to perpetrate fraud, this measure became essential. For the past few months, there have been discussions on this issue with significant service providers.
The government made the decision to formalize the directives after realizing how serious the issue was. This decision’s primary goals are to prevent telecommunication identification abuse and maintain the security of the telecom ecosystem for all users.
