Rishi Sunak, the UK’s first PM of Indian descent, resigned after the Conservative Party’s defeat, ending 14 years of Tory rule to Labour under Keir Starmer.
New Delhi: Rishi Sunak, the former prime minister of Britain, has been granted permission by a UK government authority to assume paid advisory positions with part-time hours at Microsoft, a technology company headquartered in the United States, and Anthropic, an AI firm. Sunak, who currently occupies the position of backbench Conservative Party MP for Richmond and Northallerton, had applied for sanction from the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACoBA) in accordance with the government’s “Business Appointment Rules for Former Ministers.” On Thursday, the committee disclosed its determination.
Conditions are enforced by the watchdog.
ACoBA recognized the risks associated with Sunak’s previous high office, citing his ability to access “high-level sensitive information” regarding virtually all government matters and his “extensive industry engagement” with the tech and AI sectors during his tenure.
Despite the committee’s approval, there are stringent requirements:
Sunak is prohibited from utilizing any “privileged information” that he has acquired during his tenure as prime minister.
For a minimum of two years, he is prohibited from lobbying the UK government on behalf of either Microsoft or Anthropic.
ACoBA observed that, despite the fact that the hazards associated with his access to information are “somewhat limited due to the passage of time,” it is probable that he will continue to be perceived as having “privileged insight.” As a result, a condition was implemented to restrict his role and mitigate potential hazards in accordance with government regulations.
Sunak’s charitable commitment and justification
Sunak announced that The Richmond Project, an education charity he established with his wife, Akshata Murty, will receive all proceeds from his new advisory responsibilities. The Richmond Project is dedicated to addressing numeracy issues among children in the United Kingdom.
The British Indian politician underscored his conviction in the transformative potential of the technology sector when he justified his decision to return to it:
“I have long held the conviction that technology will significantly influence our future and revolutionize our world.” I am committed to assisting these organizations in guaranteeing that this transition results in the improvements that are possible for all of us in my capacity as a senior adviser.
Career context
Sunak’s recent appointments are a continuation of his previous return to the banking sector, which was marked by his appointment as a Senior Adviser at the Goldman Sachs Group in July. Sunak was employed as an analyst at Goldman Sachs from 2001 to 2004, following his tenure as a summer intern in 2000.
Sunak, 45, commenced his political career in 2015 by being elected a Tory MP. He subsequently rose to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer and served as Britain’s first prime minister of Indian heritage from October 2022 until the Tories lost the general election in July 2024. He subsequently transitioned to the backbenches of Parliament.
