Apple requires hundreds of millions of iPhones to upgrade to iOS 26 immediately to tackle spyware, enhance Safari privacy, and enable anti-scam protections.
When Apple decides to do anything, it does it with conviction. Additionally, it seldom holds back when it comes to privacy and security. This is why the move to require all iPhone owners who are avoiding iOS 26 to upgrade immediately seems so late but is actually rather important.
It was widely anticipated that iOS 26.2 would be the last optional update for iPhone models 11 and higher. It was expected that everyone will have access to iOS 18.7.3. At first, the fixes were flagged for all iPhones, as was the case with its beta. No, not just now. Now, only the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR can access all fixes, including the most important ones.
These changes are “critical” because Apple has confirmed that iPhones are being attacked once more. More mercenary spyware has been discovered in the wild, targeting specific users but having the potential to spread far broader over time.

It introduces new safeguards against risky wired connections to guard against the types of assaults that the TSA has identified. Additionally, it brings anti-scam protection to iPhone calls and messages for the first time.
