The Uttarakhand government’s decision to change the name of Miyanwala to Ramji Wala has sparked protests among locals, who argue that the move erases their deep-rooted historical identity tied to the Rajput clan and disrespects their ancestral legacy.

The government’s announcement on April 1, 2025, which also included renaming other places such as Aurangzebpur to Shivaji Nagar, has stirred political controversy, with local residents calling for a reversal of the decision. The residents claim that Miyanwala is not just a locality but a symbol of their heritage, named after the Mian title associated with a Rajput community, with no connections to Mughals or Muslims.

A Community’s Heritage Under Threat

In their letter, the residents of Miyanwala emphasized that the name of their neighborhood had always been tied to the Mian Rajput community, renowned for their bravery and martial traditions. The area has long been a symbol of Rajput pride, and its renaming is seen by many as a misguided attempt to change the community’s historical narrative.

“We have always been proud of our identity as Miyanwala. The name connects us to our ancestors, the brave Rajput warriors, and to change it is to deny our heritage,” said Jitender Singh Miyan, a resident of the area. Mahendra Singh Butola, another resident, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the community would continue its peaceful protests until the government reconsiders its decision.

Residents also expressed concern that such name changes were politically motivated and divisive. They argue that the name Miyanwala has been in use for centuries and should be preserved as a tribute to the area’s original inhabitants and their values.

“Mians were known as brave warriors and were especially recruited by the Garhwali and Kumaoni kings for crucial battles. They have no connection to Muslim or Mughal rule,” Rawat said. He further highlighted the importance of Miyanwala in the region’s history, noting that it was part of the land granted by Raja Fateh Shah of the Garhwal Kingdom in the 17th century, long before Dehradun became a prominent city.

Moreover, Rawat stressed that Dehradun, a historically independent region, was never under Mughal influence, making the connection between Miyanwala and the Mughals implausible. The renaming of the area, he argued, was both factually incorrect and culturally insensitive.

The Government’s Response and Support for Renaming

The Uttarakhand government defended the name change, claiming that the decision was made based on public sentiment. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed gratitude for the new name, Ramji Wala, emphasizing that it reflects the spirit of the Kshatriya community, which he said is embodied in the figure of Lord Ram.

“Some people are raising questions about this and trying to create divisions. But is there any Kshatriya greater than Lord Ram? He is the pride of the Kshatriya clan,” Dhami remarked, dismissing opposition as a result of “narrow-mindedness.”

However, state Congress chief spokesperson Garima Mehra Dasauni criticized the government’s decision. She questioned the lack of research into the historical context before renaming the area, and argued that the move reflected a divisive agenda by the government. “Who suggested this name change to the chief minister? Why was no proper homework done?” Dasauni asked. She further added that the name Miyanwala was deeply rooted in the identity of the Rajput community and should be preserved.
