Punjab Gears Up for Efficient Wheat Procurement Amidst Rabi Season
Chandigarh/Sangrur, April 8, 2025: In a concerted effort to streamline the wheat procurement process for the Rabi season, Punjab’s Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister, Lal Chand Kataruchak, convened a review meeting with officials from seven districts, including Sangrur. The meeting, held at the District Administrative Complex, underscored the state’s commitment to supporting its farming community and ensuring food security.
Robust Preparations for a Bumper Wheat Crop
Minister Kataruchak highlighted the government’s proactive measures to facilitate a smooth procurement season. The state has set an ambitious target of purchasing 124 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat, anticipating a bumper crop this year. To achieve this, authorities have established 1,864 regular procurement centers and 600 temporary mandis, ensuring accessibility for farmers across the state. These centers are equipped with essential facilities, including drinking water, sanitation, lighting, and medical aid, to provide a comfortable environment for all stakeholders involved.
Financial Preparedness and Transparency in Payments
Demonstrating financial readiness, the Punjab government has secured a Cash Credit Limit (CCL) of ₹28,894 crore for wheat procurement. This substantial fund allocation aims to ensure timely payments to farmers, adhering to the government’s commitment to deposit payments within 24 hours of procurement. Minister Kataruchak emphasized that the Chief Minister has mandated that no farmer, arhtiya (commission agent), or laborer should face difficulties during the procurement process, reflecting the government’s dedication to transparency and efficiency.
Ensuring Uninterrupted Procurement Operations
To prevent any disruptions, the government has mandated that procurement operations resume within 24 hours after rainfall cessation. District Food Supply Controllers and other officials have been instructed to remain vigilant and address any challenges promptly. Additionally, the authorities have set up checkpoints at interstate barriers to prevent the illegal entry of wheat from other states, safeguarding the interests of local farmers.
