Punjab’s Fields Will Not Go Dry to Quench Other States: Barinder Kumar Goyal

Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal has made it clear that the state’s agricultural heartland will not be sacrificed to meet the water demands of other states. Stressing the importance of protecting Punjab’s lifeline — its water — the minister firmly stated that no compromise would be made when it comes to safeguarding the rights and needs of the state’s farmers.

“Punjab’s Position Is Clear and Unshakeable”

In an interview with the media, Goyal reiterated Punjab’s firm stance on the contentious water issue. We will not allow Punjab’s crops to dry up in order to shift water elsewhere. “Our farmers rely on it for a living, and our government is behind them,” he added. He accused Haryana of already exceeding its lawful water allocation and said that Punjab will reject any further pressure from the Centre or Haryana to yield more.

The minister was categorical in asserting that the state would not tolerate the unjust exploitation or forced diversion of its water resources. “We will fight this battle legally, politically and morally,” he added.

BBMB Meetings Must Follow Rules

Touching upon Punjab’s role in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), Goyal said the state would fully participate in board meetings — but only when they are held as per established norms. “We will not entertain any meeting that bypasses protocol or attempts to sideline Punjab’s rightful voice,” he said, subtly criticizing the Centre for allegedly trying to circumvent due process.

The Punjab government has called a special session of the Vidhan Sabha on May 5 to debate the issue further and devise a strategy. “This session will allow us to present a united front and chalk out a plan that puts Punjab’s interests first,” Goyal told reporters.

Farmers Rejoice Over Firozepur Feeder Project Approval

In a heartwarming moment, farmers from Fazilka district met the minister to thank him for the long-awaited approval of the ₹647.43 crore Firozepur Feeder relining project. They greeted him with sweets and gratitude, praising the Punjab government’s commitment to rural and agricultural welfare.

Goyal stressed the significance of the project, stating that increasing the capacity and relining the Firozepur Feeder Canal will provide much-needed water to the farmlands of Fazilka, Firozepur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Faridkot districts. Furthermore, it will contribute to addressing the long-standing problem of filthy ‘black water’ from Pakistan’s Kasur drain, which affects the border villages of Fazilka.

Goyal’s visit, accompanied by Fazilka MLA Narinder Pal Singh Sawna, Balluana MLA Amandeep Singh Goldy Musafir, Jalalabad MLA Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy, and former MLA Arun Narang, evolved into a moment of togetherness and optimism for the agricultural community.

“This project isn’t just about canal water — it’s about dignity, relief, and respect for our farmers,” Goyal remarked.
