Punjab Battles Floods With Collective Efforts
Punjab is grappling with one of the worst floods in recent years, leaving thousands of families displaced and farmland submerged. Amid this crisis, the Punjab Government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has launched extensive relief and rescue operations.
From distributing essential supplies to physically strengthening embankments, both citizens and Cabinet Ministers are working on the ground to ensure timely assistance. Volunteers, government officials, and local communities are collectively striving to provide relief to flood-hit families across affected districts.
Cabinet Ministers Lead From the Front
Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema personally oversaw relief operations in Dirba. He participated in packaging daily essentials for flood-affected families, emphasizing that no household will be left without support. A truckload of supplies arranged by district veterinary officers was also dispatched to impacted villages.
In Nangal and Sri Anandpur Sahib, Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bans inspected river embankments and supervised rescue operations near Lakshmi Narayan Mandir along the Nangal Dam. For the third consecutive day, he took direct command of filling a major breach, assuring residents that he would remain on-site until relief work is fully completed.
Cabinet Minister S. Harbhajan Singh ETO also played a crucial role by dispatching medicines, flour, dry milk, fodder, and animal feed to Ajnala constituency. He distributed aid in Malikpur and Sarai villages and personally met Simarjit Kaur, a woman injured in a roof collapse, promising her all necessary assistance.
Relief Operations Expand Across Districts
The scale of relief operations reflects a coordinated effort between the government and citizens. Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and Panchayat Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond reached Fazilka’s border villages by boat, including Gulaba Bhaini, to deliver aid directly to stranded families.
Meanwhile, Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal inspected villages along the Ghaggar River in Lehragaga and Moonak regions. He thanked villagers for their cooperation in strengthening embankments and assured them that every measure was being taken to minimize further damage.
In the Majha belt, Cabinet Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar visited flood-hit areas of Patti constituency, distributing relief material to families. He was joined by Giani Raghbir Singh, Head Granthi of Darbar Sahib, who took stock of conditions in villages along the Dhussi Bundh, including Gharum, Kuttiwala, Basti Lal Singh, Ghullewala, Sabhran, and Radhalke.
Similarly, Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian toured affected villages in Lambi constituency, covering Midda, Raniwala, Sarawan, and Pakki Tibbi, and assured all possible assistance.
Health Support and Emergency Measures
With floodwaters raising concerns about public health, Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh distributed medical kits in affected areas. He instructed ASHA workers to conduct door-to-door awareness drives on waterborne disease prevention. Additionally, he urged residents to use the 104 medical helpline for emergencies.
Veterinary teams have also been deployed to protect livestock, while district administrations are coordinating with local volunteers to ensure that every family receives essential supplies such as food, medicines, and clean water.
Outlook
The Punjab Government, backed by active citizen participation, continues to prioritize relief and rehabilitation. While challenges remain, particularly in health and long-term recovery, the administration has assured that no flood-hit family will be left behind.
