Punjab Government to Address Disaster Funds in Vidhan Sabha Session
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Thursday said that the upcoming Vidhan Sabha session will prioritize discussions on disaster management funds and the government’s relief efforts for flood-affected communities.
Cheema also flagged off three ambulances from Mohali to provide crucial medical services in flood-hit districts. The initiative, part of the government’s wider flood response strategy, comes alongside the global fundraising success of Mission Chardi Kala, which has drawn overwhelming support from the Punjabi diaspora.
Government Focus on Flood Relief
The Finance Minister assured that the Punjab Government will “go the extra mile” to support flood victims, pledging every possible step to rebuild affected regions.
“These ambulances will serve people in flood-hit areas for the next 45 days. Free medical check-ups and medicines will be provided, and serious patients will be referred to nearby healthcare facilities,” Cheema said.
Punjab witnessed widespread destruction this monsoon, with villages submerged and thousands displaced. The government is now accelerating efforts to restore normalcy and provide health care, food, and shelter to the affected population.
Health Minister Reviews Relief Operations
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh reviewed ongoing relief operations in Fazilka district. He emphasized that the state aims to restore life in flood-affected areas within 45 days.
“We are highly vigilant so that no serious disease can spread after the floods. Preventing outbreaks is our top priority,” Dr. Singh said.
He also praised the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), urging them to adopt villages and support recovery efforts. “Our NGOs have always been at the forefront of public service. Their help is vital in this crisis,” he added.
Mission Chardi Kala Gains Momentum
Dr. Singh further highlighted the significance of Mission Chardi Kala, a fundraising campaign launched to aid flood recovery. The campaign has received an enthusiastic response from the global Punjabi community.
“Punjabis are known worldwide for their generosity. Donations can be made through rangla.punjab.gov.in. The funds will directly support flood relief work,” Dr. Singh said.
He appealed to organizations and individuals to continue contributing, adding that the government will use the funds transparently to uplift both the physical and social conditions of flood-affected families.
Vidhan Sabha to Discuss Disaster Funds
Cheema announced that the upcoming Vidhan Sabha session will focus on strengthening disaster management mechanisms and ensuring timely fund allocation.
“This session will prioritize disaster management and relief financing. Punjab needs stronger mechanisms to respond to such calamities in the future,” he said.
Officials have estimated massive losses due to the floods, including damage to crops, homes, schools, and public infrastructure. The government is preparing a detailed report to table during the assembly session, hoping to push for greater disaster relief funding and planning.
