Punjab Government expands anti-rabies vaccine to 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics, providing free five-dose treatment to dog bite victims statewide.
For many years, the effects of a dog bite in Punjab extended much beyond the actual injury. The fear of rabies, a disease that is 100% lethal if left untreated but completely curable with prompt immunization, loomed big over thousands of families with about three lakh dog bite cases reported each year. Due to the fact that just 48 Primary Health Centers had access to Anti-Rabies vaccine (ARV), victims—many of whom were youngsters, the elderly, and daily wage workers—were forced to travel great distances, wait for hours, lose their jobs, and frequently give up on the important five-dose vaccine schedule in the middle. There was a high human cost and structural shortcomings.

The Aam Aadmi Clinics have become the mainstay of Punjab’s primary healthcare system, seeing close to 70,000 patients daily and recording over 4.6 million OPD visits collectively. The Mann Government has made sure that a dog bite no longer results in fear, cost, or delay by incorporating ARV services throughout all of these facilities. With the closest clinic offering a free five-dose vaccination course, immediate treatment is now accessible close to home, without waiting in line, traveling, or having to worry about money.
Rapid and quantifiable effects have been observed. Aam Aadmi Clinics have seen an average of 1,500 dog bite cases every month over the past four months alone. Importantly, patients can now begin therapy minutes after arriving, significantly lowering the chance of rabies deaths. The prior, hospital-centric methodology did not guarantee that thousands of people would complete the entire vaccine schedule.
Its impact on the patient experience is equally noteworthy. What used to be a difficult, expensive, and unpredictable situation has been transformed into a smooth public health safety net. Instant care, appropriate counseling, organized follow-up, and ongoing medical supervision are all provided to victims in their local communities. This transition has provided protection without sacrificing daily wage earners or rural households.
The Bhagwant Mann Government’s larger governance concept is emphasized by this reform, which goes beyond infrastructure and numbers.
