Suspended Punjab DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar’s judicial custody extended by 14 days in bribery case; CBI recovered assets worth crores from his home.

Harcharan Singh Bhullar, a suspended Punjab Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) who was detained in connection with a bribery case, had his judicial custody extended by fourteen days by a CBI court here on Friday, October 31, 2025, according to an official.

Mr. Bhullar, who is currently being held at Burail jail here, appeared before the court via video conference at the conclusion of his two-week judicial custody.

“There was an application from CBI regarding extension of judicial custody by fourteen days and the court extended it till November 14,” stated the attorney for Mr. Bhullar.

On October 16, the accused and another individual were taken into custody in relation to a corruption case involving ₹8 lakh in bribes.

After Mandi Gobindgarh, a scrap merchant in Fatehgarh Sahib, filed a complaint stating that the senior IPS officer required recurrent monthly payment for “settling” a 2023 FIR against him, Mr. Bhullar was detained from his Mohali office.

According to the CBI’s FIR, the complainant said that DIG Bhullar used his middleman to demand unlawful gratification in order to resolve the 2023 FIR against him in Sirhind and to guarantee that no additional coercive or unfavorable police action was taken against his junk company.

He further claimed that Mr. Bhullar had been threatening to falsely incriminate him in criminal cases pertaining to his business if he did not comply with his demands for “sewa-paani,” or recurrent monthly payments.

Mr. Bhullar was placed under 14 days of judicial detention by a CBI court here on October 17, and this period was extended on Friday.

In addition to documentation of immovable assets in the names of family members, the investigating agency found 26 branded and pricey watches, cash worth over ₹7.36 crore, and jewelry worth over ₹2.32 crore during searches at the DIG’s Chandigarh home.

The accused was charged in accordance with pertinent provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988 and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita of 2023.

In November 2024, Mr. Bhullar was named DIG (Ropar Range). The districts of Mohali, Rupnagar, and Fatehgarh Sahib make up the Ropar Range. The state administration suspended him following his detention.
