Chandigarh, April 16, 2025 — Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has taken the helm of a Group of Ministers (GoM) to oversee the commemoration of the 350th Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. The GoM’s formation follows a directive from the Chief Minister to ensure the observance is executed with due reverence and efficiency.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru, is revered for his unwavering commitment to human rights and religious freedom. His supreme sacrifice in 1675, choosing martyrdom over compromising his principles, epitomizes the Sikh ethos of standing against tyranny and oppression.
In a meeting held at his official residence, CM Mann emphasized the significance of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s sacrifice, describing it as unparalleled in human history. He stated that the state government is duty-bound to organize a series of events to observe this momentous occasion.
Formation of GoM and Executive Committee
The Chief Minister announced the establishment of a GoM, chaired by himself, comprising ministers from the Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Public Works, Information and Public Relations, and Higher Education departments. This committee will oversee all arrangements for the commemorative events.
Additionally, an Executive Committee, led by the Chief Secretary, will monitor the events on a daily basis. This dual-tiered approach aims to ensure meticulous planning and execution of the commemorations.
Planned Events and Infrastructure Development
The state government has outlined a comprehensive plan to mark the 350th Martyrdom Day of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. A series of functions will be organized across Punjab, including seminars, conferences, kirtan darbars, light and sound shows, and the publication of books. These events aim to educate the public about the Guru’s teachings and legacy.
In addition to cultural programs, the government plans to undertake significant infrastructure development at 63 historical sites associated with Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. These sites, located in districts such as Roopnagar, Mansa, Bathinda, Patiala, Jalandhar, Sangrur, SBS Nagar, Tarn Taran, Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, Barnala, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Amritsar, and SAS Nagar, will receive enhancements to preserve and promote their historical significance.
Furthermore, the state government has urged the central government to construct a convention center in Mohali, establish a medical college and hospital in Sri Anandpur Sahib, and set up a degree college in Baba Bakala, Amritsar, all named after Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. Additionally, a commemorative postal stamp honoring the Guru is being proposed.
Commitment to Promoting Punjab’s Cultural Heritage
CM Mann reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting Punjab’s rich cultural heritage. He announced plans to organize the ‘Rangla Punjab’ festival in February, aimed at showcasing Punjab as a premier global tourist destination. The festival will highlight the state’s vibrant culture, history, and hospitality.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of preserving Punjab’s cultural heritage through annual heritage festivals. These festivals will be celebrated on a grand scale to ensure the state’s rich traditions are passed down to future generations.
