Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann Unveils Rs 200 Crore Development for Malerkotla on Eid, Vows to Oppose Waqf Amendment Bill
Malerkotla, March 31, 2025 – In a major boost to the historic town of Malerkotla, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has announced an extensive development package worth Rs 200 crore, promising a comprehensive facelift for the town. The announcement came during the Eid celebrations, where the Chief Minister also reiterated his strong opposition to the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill proposed by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.
The announcement of the development projects is seen as a significant step towards enhancing Malerkotla’s infrastructure, healthcare, and educational facilities. The projects, which include the construction of a 100-seat medical college, a super-specialty hospital, and modern roads, are set to improve the quality of life for residents and attract more investments to the region.
Development Projects to Transform Malerkotla
During his visit to Malerkotla, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann assured the citizens of his government’s commitment to their well-being. He announced the Rs 200 crore package, which will fund a wide range of development projects across the district. The most notable projects include:
- A 100-seat medical college to position Malerkotla as a hub of medical education in Punjab.
- A 200-bed super-specialty hospital for providing advanced healthcare services to the residents.
- The upgrade of Malerkotla’s girls’ college to enhance educational opportunities for young women in the region.
In addition to education and healthcare infrastructure, the Chief Minister also highlighted plans for urban renewal. A new district administrative complex, Tehsil Complex, and improvements to public sanitation and recreational facilities will be part of the development efforts. The Chief Minister emphasized that these projects will not only improve public services but also stimulate local economic growth.
The roads leading to Malerkotla will also undergo a significant transformation, with Jarg-Rauni and Khanna Road being strengthened to ensure better connectivity. Furthermore, the Chief Minister announced that a new bus stand, link roads, and playgrounds would be developed to enhance transportation and recreational amenities.
Focus on Rural Transport and Employment
One of the standout features of the development plan is the introduction of a Mini Bus Service for rural areas. This initiative aims to improve transportation access for residents of remote villages and create new job opportunities for unemployed youth. The government will also be granting permits for mini-buses, empowering local entrepreneurs to support rural mobility.
A Commitment to Communal Harmony
In his Eid address, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann also underscored the importance of communal harmony and brotherhood, values that have always been central to the region’s identity. Speaking to a large gathering at the local Eid Gah, he expressed his hope that the sacred occasion of Eid would continue to strengthen the bonds of peace and unity across the state.
The Chief Minister also took this opportunity to praise the efforts of Malerkotla’s residents who had gathered to pray for a drug-free Punjab. CM Mann emphasized that the battle against drug abuse could only be won through active public participation and vowed that his government would continue to work towards a healthier, drug-free society.
Opposing the Waqf Amendment Bill
Amidst the festive celebrations, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann strongly opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill put forward by the BJP-led NDA government. The bill, which has sparked significant opposition from various quarters, is seen as an attempt to centralize control over Waqf properties and could potentially undermine the autonomy of state-level boards managing these properties.
In his statement, CM Mann made it clear that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stood firmly with the Muslim community in Punjab, which has been vocal in its opposition to the bill. He assured the people that the Punjab government would vigorously oppose the bill both in Parliament and in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, emphasizing that the rights and interests of the Muslim community would be protected at all costs.
Addressing Punjab’s Water Crisis
CM Bhagwant Singh Mann also addressed the pressing issue of groundwater depletion in Punjab. He highlighted that his government had taken significant steps to address this challenge by reviving 15,947 water courses across the state. These efforts have been successful in ensuring that water reaches even the most remote villages, thereby promoting efficient irrigation and helping conserve groundwater resources.
Looking to the Future: Malerkotla as a Model District
As part of his commitment to the holistic development of Malerkotla, CM Mann declared that the district would soon be transformed into a model district. The state government has already formulated a roadmap for this transformation, which includes providing modern infrastructure, ensuring better access to essential services, and improving the overall quality of life for the residents.
He also recalled the noble gesture of the Nawab of Malerkotla who had historically opposed the execution of the Chotta Sahibzadas at Sirhind, a gesture that has cemented Malerkotla’s place in Punjab’s history. The Chief Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to honor the memory of this gesture by investing in the district’s future and ensuring its progress.
