Bhagwant Singh Mann Government Accelerates Four-Laning of Patiala-Sirhind Road with Safety and Progress at the Forefront

The much-anticipated four-laning project of the Patiala-Sirhind road is rapidly moving ahead under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, bringing new hope for safer and smoother travel in the region.

Punjab’s Public Works Department Minister, S. Harbhajan Singh ETO, shared encouraging updates on the progress of this crucial infrastructure initiative. Announced by CM Mann during last year’s Vyapar Milni in Patiala, the project involves widening the existing road into a four-lane highway, along with constructing a steel bridge over the Bhakra Main Line near village Sidhuwal — a key addition that has already been completed and opened to traffic.

Minister Harbhajan Singh revealed that nearly 25% of the entire work has been completed, with Rs 32 crore already invested. The construction work is proceeding at a steady and impressive pace, with the target set for completion by March 31, 2026.

Beyond improving connectivity, this project holds immense promise for road safety. The four-laning will eliminate 12 known accident-prone spots along the route, significantly reducing the risk of fatalities and injuries. This enhancement is a crucial step toward protecting lives and making daily commutes safer for thousands of travelers.

The project, costing Rs 119.6 crore, not only aims to ease traffic congestion but also to boost trade and commerce by providing better regional connectivity. The newly constructed steel bridge over the Bhakra canal is a landmark addition that underscores the government’s commitment to modern, efficient infrastructure.

Minister Harbhajan Singh also shed light on the hurdles faced during the project’s early days. Though administrative approval was given by the previous government in December 2021, work stalled due to missing environmental clearances and unresolved utility relocations. The earlier contract, awarded in January 2022, had to be terminated amid disputes, delaying progress and denying the public a much-needed upgraded road.

Under CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s visionary leadership, these obstacles were swiftly addressed. All mandatory clearances from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) were obtained, and the project was re-assigned to ensure smooth execution. Forest land covering 22.59 hectares was acquired responsibly, with the Forest Department compensating by developing 45.18 hectares of forest elsewhere in Punjab.

In addition, to offset the removal of thousands of trees and plants during construction, an ambitious plantation drive is underway. The Forest Department is planting over 60,000 saplings under compensatory and additional afforestation programs, reaffirming the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability alongside development.

Minister Harbhajan Singh emphasized that strict instructions have been issued to all departmental officers to maintain high-quality standards and meet project deadlines with dedication. This renewed focus promises timely completion and lasting benefits for the people of Punjab.

With steady progress and an emphasis on safety, environmental care, and economic growth, the Patiala-Sirhind road four-laning project stands as a shining example of the Mann government’s commitment to transforming Punjab’s infrastructure for a better tomorrow.
