Lok Sabha Seat Delimitation Sparks Debate Over Fair Representation in India

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann demands fair and uniform approach to Lok Sabha seat delimitation, warning against political misuse of population data.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has raised concerns over the ongoing discussion around parliamentary restructuring, stating that the Lok Sabha seat delimitation process must remain fair, transparent, and free from political influence. His remarks were shared through the official AAP Punjab X handle.

Call for Neutral Process in Delimitation

CM Bhagwant Mann emphasized that the Lok Sabha seat delimitation exercise should not be used as a political tool to influence electoral outcomes. He stressed that any change in parliamentary constituencies must follow a uniform and non-partisan framework applicable to all states.

According to him, decisions related to the Lok Sabha seat delimitation should be taken only after detailed consultation with all stakeholders to ensure fairness in representation.

Concerns Over Federal Structure

The Chief Minister warned that improper handling of the Lok Sabha seat delimitation process could affect India’s federal balance. He said that population-based changes must not weaken the representation of certain states or disturb the structure of cooperative federalism.

He added that a wide national consensus is necessary before implementing any major changes linked to the Lok Sabha seat delimitation exercise.

Question on Women’s Reservation

Raising another issue, Mann questioned why the BJP has not ensured women’s reservation across all 543 Lok Sabha seats. He suggested that reforms related to representation should be applied uniformly and not selectively, linking the debate to broader electoral reforms alongside the Lok Sabha seat delimitation issue.

Demand for Equal Criteria Across States

Bhagwant Mann stressed that any redistribution or increase in parliamentary seats must follow a single, equal standard for all states. He warned that inconsistent rules could lead to imbalance in representation and deepen political differences within the Lok Sabha seat delimitation framework.

The comments by CM Bhagwant Mann have added momentum to the national discussion on electoral restructuring. The Lok Sabha seat delimitation debate continues to gain attention, with calls for transparency, equality, and protection of India’s federal principles at its core.
