BBMB Punjab Rights Issue : Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains has strongly opposed the Centre’s decision to change recruitment rules in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), alleging that it is a direct attack on Punjab’s rights and interests in water management.
He said Punjab’s future related to water resources and public welfare is closely linked with BBMB, and earlier rules ensured that at least one officer appointed to the board must be from Punjab to protect the state’s interests.
BBMB Punjab Rights Issue Raises Serious Concerns
Harjot Singh Bains highlighted the BBMB Punjab rights issue, stating that the Centre’s decision to allow appointments from any part of the country weakens Punjab’s representation in the board. The BBMB Punjab rights issue has sparked political concern over fairness and federal balance.
He further added that the BBMB Punjab rights issue directly impacts Punjab’s control over its water resources and decision-making authority. According to him, the BBMB Punjab rights issue is a serious dilution of established norms that ensured Punjab’s participation in key administrative decisions.
The minister emphasized that the BBMB Punjab rights issue must be reversed immediately to safeguard Punjab’s constitutional and administrative rights.

Demand for Political Response
Bains also urged Punjab BJP leaders to clarify their stand on the issue and demand that the Centre withdraw the decision. He accused the central government of ignoring Punjab’s interests while making such policy changes.
Importance of BBMB for Punjab
He reiterated that BBMB plays a vital role in managing Punjab’s water resources, which are crucial for agriculture and the state’s economy. Any reduction in Punjab’s representation, he said, could have long-term consequences.
The controversy surrounding BBMB recruitment rules has intensified political debate in the state. The BBMB Punjab rights issue remains central to discussions on federal structure and water governance.
Harjot Singh Bains has called for the immediate rollback of the decision, stressing that the BBMB Punjab rights issue must be resolved to protect Punjab’s rightful interests.
