Harjot Bains Sets June Deadline for ₹14-Crore Flood Protection Works in Anandpur Sahib
Chandigarh, June 12: In a strong push toward monsoon preparedness, Punjab Education Minister and Anandpur Sahib MLA S. Harjot Singh Bains has issued firm directives for the completion of ongoing flood protection works in the Anandpur Sahib constituency by the end of June. These 112 projects, collectively valued at ₹14 crore, aim to fortify the region’s resilience against recurring flood threats.
Chairing a high-level review meeting with officials from the Water Resources Department, PWD, and other allied departments, Bains emphasized the need for urgency and efficiency in delivering these critical infrastructure projects ahead of the rainy season.
“Protecting our people from seasonal floods is not just a priority but a commitment. These flood protection projects are being executed on a war footing to ensure the safety and welfare of our citizens,” Bains stated.
₹14 Crore Allocated for 112 Projects
According to Bains, the ₹14-crore initiative encompasses a diverse range of flood mitigation measures:
- Desilting and cleaning of drains and choes
- Construction of revetments and studs
- Building of check dams and soak pits
These projects are spread across several vulnerable villages, including Nakkian, Mehndali Khurd, Behrampur, Raipur Sahni, Chandpur, Mindhwan, Nikku Nangal, Jindwari, Tarapur, Bhallari, Ramgarh Bela, Paharpur, and Sadhewal.
“These projects will not only protect the villages from annual flood damage but also improve irrigation and groundwater recharge,” Bains added.
Villagers to Gain Direct Benefits
With the region historically prone to flooding during the monsoon, especially due to overflowing choes and blocked drainage systems, the projects are expected to deliver substantial relief. Residents in low-lying and flood-hit villages will particularly benefit from the timely execution of these works.
Bains assured that the local demands voiced during his recent visits to these villages have been factored into the project planning. The works are being tailored to local topography and water flow patterns, ensuring lasting impact and sustainability.
Stronger Focus on Monsoon Preparedness
The initiative aligns with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s vision of a proactive, citizen-focused government. The state administration, having witnessed the widespread devastation of flash floods in recent years, is prioritizing infrastructure improvements in flood-prone areas.
“Flood preparedness isn’t just about crisis response. It’s about anticipating risk and acting in time. That’s what we’re delivering in Anandpur Sahib,” Bains said during the briefing.
The projects are part of a broader strategy by the Punjab Government to ensure effective water resource management, soil conservation, and rural development in the state.
Monitoring and Accountability
Bains has also directed that all departments maintain strict oversight and adhere to quality standards during execution. Regular field inspections and progress reviews will be conducted to ensure transparency and prevent delays.
He warned against any complacency, stating, “Delays or substandard work will not be tolerated. The safety of thousands depends on how well we execute these projects.”
