Punjab Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO criticizes BJP for delaying Punjab University Senate elections, pledges to protect students and university democracy.

Mr. Harbhajan Singh ETO, the cabinet minister for Punjab, blasted the BJP-led central government for failing to announce the date of the Punjab University (PU) Chandigarh Senate elections. The minister stated that although the central government has retracted the contentious announcement, the date of the next elections has not yet been set. He went on to say that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, will support Punjabis, particularly students, to protect their interests and will do all in its power to reinstate the university’s federal status.

According to Minister ETO, the BJP government has not yet declared a schedule for the 91 Senate members whose terms ended on October 31, 2024, which is a clear assault on the university’s democratic system. According to him, the BJP government will encounter opposition from all facets of society if it does not uphold the nation’s democratic traditions. The demonstration against the central government will continue until the Senate election date is announced, he added. According to him, their government will denounce the BJP’s blatant assault on the university’s federal structure from all angles.
