Punjab launches first government mental health fellowship, training 35 young professionals to combat drug addiction and support communities.
Punjab has seen a remarkable start in the field of mental health. The first government leadership program in mental health in the nation was started by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. According to him, war is a grassroots struggle where every family’s security and future are at risk, not merely a catchphrase against drugs. The fellowship will last for two years. It will serve as a model for all of India, not just Punjab.
The program, which was started in collaboration with TISS Mumbai and AIIMS Mohali, would elevate drug addiction and mental health in 23 areas. Thirty-five young professionals with backgrounds in social work or psychology and experience working in mental health are being selected by the government. By merging the three prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation approaches of the past, these fellows will reach villages, cities, schools, colleges, community centers, and rehabilitation to implement a model that India has envisioned.

The necessity of bolstering society
According to Bhagwant Mann, society’s mindset needs to be reinforced in order to combat drugs, and this is not only the duty of the government or the police. The Fellows will have the opportunity to get specialized training, mentorship, and grassroots leadership from TISS Mumbai as a result of this approach. Additionally, they would receive a fair salary of Rs 60,000 per month, which will allow them to interact with Punjab’s kids and families without feeling pressured.
The medicine has proliferated like wildfire.
Actually, this initiative is Punjab’s lifeblood. Drug addiction had spread like wildfire, but Punjab has finally made the decision to combat it with professionals, scientific techniques, and human resources. Bhagwant Mann has demonstrated that governments bring about change, not just rhetoric, when their intentions are clear and their purpose is the benefit of the populace.
