Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Clinics provide free prenatal care and ultrasounds to 20,000 women monthly, transforming maternal health across the state.

The Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab government has effectively decentralized maternal healthcare, with Aam Aadmi Clinics (AACs) emerging as the new lifeline for expecting mothers, in a significant step toward preserving the health of future generations. With almost 20,000 pregnant women attending these clinics each month, the state has seen a dramatic increase in service consumption in just four months since implementing a specialized, protocol-driven prenatal care approach.

Dr. Balbir Singh, the Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister, shared the initiative’s success, stating that more than 10,000 women have already received free ultrasound treatments through the program’s special referral system. The government has made sure that women may have scans, which typically cost between ₹800 and ₹2,000, completely free of charge by partnering with around 500 private diagnostic institutes. In just 120 days, this intervention alone has saved Punjabi households an estimated ₹1 crore in out-of-pocket costs.

According to official data, Punjab’s maternal mortality rate was higher than the national average at 90 per lakh live births, and less than 70% of pregnant women had received their first prenatal checkup and less than 60% had finished the recommended four checkups. These numbers demonstrated how urgently the state needs a comprehensive, easily accessible model of pregnancy care.

With around 4.3 lakh pregnancies in Punjab each year, early detection, consistent monitoring, and prompt referral are essential to protecting mothers’ and babies’ health. With over 4.6 crore OPD visits and approximately 70,000 patients treated every day, the 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics that the Mann administration created over the past three years have become the foundation of Punjab’s primary healthcare system. About four months ago, the government introduced an expanded, protocol-driven pregnancy care approach through AACs, utilizing this infrastructure.

As a result of this reform, Aam Aadmi Clinics now offer all necessary prenatal exams. Routine and important examinations including syphilis and HIV screening, comprehensive blood tests, and evaluations of fetal heart rate, sugar, thyroid, hepatitis, cholesterol, and hemoglobin are among them. AAC physicians provide referral papers so expectant mothers can obtain free ultrasound services when they are necessary.

Crucially, around 5,000 women are recognized each month as having high-risk pregnancies, which enables ongoing monitoring, targeted assistance, and prompt referral to more advanced medical facilities for specialized care.

Additionally, the patient experience has been much enhanced by the change. Nowadays, women may get the majority of pregnancy-related tests near their homes, skip lengthy travel and wait times at large hospitals, get consultations in a matter of minutes, and use ultrasound services without having to pay for them. Through the integration of technology, standardized clinical protocols, referral systems, and community-level support, the program enhances the entire pregnancy care pathway from the initial prenatal appointment to post-natal follow-up.

The Punjab government’s dedication to maternal and child health is reflected in this significant accomplishment, according to the Health Minister. “Punjab is developing a healthcare system that guarantees every mother receives high-quality care near home under the inspiring leadership of Bhagwant Mann. The expansion of pregnancy care services at Aam Aadmi Clinics is a revolutionary step and establishes a new standard for primary healthcare in India, where there are 4.3 lakh pregnancies yearly, he added.

According to the government, the program is among Punjab’s biggest investments in maternal and child health in recent years. Its goal is to improve the health of mothers and newborns throughout the state while making sure that no woman is left behind because of her location, her financial situation, or her lack of knowledge.
