Haryana government mandates strict adherence to Indian government rules on language for Scheduled Castes and Tribes in all official documents.

In all official matters and correspondence, the Haryana government has directed all administrative secretaries, heads of departments, boards, corporations, public sector undertakings, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, sub-divisional officers (civil), and university registrars in the state to refrain from using terms like “Harijan” and “Girijan.” The Chief Secretary’s Office has sent out a letter regarding this.

The letter reiterates that Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are not referred to by these terms in the Indian Constitution. The State Government has made reference to the directives of the Indian government, which explicitly require that these terms be avoided in official correspondence.

The State Government examined the situation and discovered that several ministries had not been closely following the aforementioned directives. As a result, all departments and authorities have been instructed to guarantee complete adherence to the Central Government’s directives and to stop using the terms “Harijan” and “Girijan” in all official documents, letters, and communications.
