Ahmedabad :  The Gujarat Local Body Elections Controversy has intensified after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of undermining democratic processes during the recent local self-governance polls.

Addressing the media, AAP Gujarat State Chief Spokesperson Dr. Karan Barot alleged that the elections witnessed large-scale irregularities, calling it a “murder of democracy.” He claimed that more than 700 candidates were declared elected unopposed, effectively denying citizens their fundamental right to vote.

Highlighting the seriousness of the Gujarat Local Body Elections Controversy, Barot said that several AAP candidates were deliberately prevented from filing nominations. In many cases, even after filing nomination papers, candidates allegedly faced restrictions in campaigning, with reports of obstruction and intimidation surfacing from multiple regions.

He further alleged that AAP workers were targeted, and in some incidents, even abducted to disrupt election activities. “This is not just political rivalry; this is a systematic attempt to silence opposition voices,” Barot stated.

The Gujarat Local Body Elections Controversy deepened further with claims that voters were intimidated in areas where BJP received fewer votes. According to Barot, incidents were reported where roads were dug up and electricity poles removed in such areas, allegedly as a form of retaliation.

Raising concerns about voter suppression, Barot pointed out that on polling day, many voters found their names missing from electoral rolls. In some cases, voters were redirected to different polling booths, creating confusion and preventing them from casting their votes. In one shocking instance, around 1,000 residents from a single housing society were reportedly unable to vote due to missing names.

“These developments clearly show the failure of the government machinery,” Barot said, adding that the Gujarat Local Body Elections Controversy reflects serious lapses in electoral management and governance.

The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities and has called for accountability to ensure that such incidents do not undermine the democratic fabric in the future.
