In a landmark step to promote religious tourism and preserve cultural heritage, Punaura Dham, the revered birthplace of Mata Janaki (Sita) in Sitamarhi, Bihar, is set to receive a significant facelift. As part of the state’s inclusion in the Ramayana Circuit, the site will be developed on the lines of Ayodhya, with an investment of around ₹143 crore.
The Bihar Tourism Department has greenlit this ambitious project aimed at transforming Punaura Dham into a world-class pilgrimage destination. The plan includes land acquisition, infrastructure development, improved tourist amenities, and the construction of a grand temple in honor of Mata Sita.
Major Investment to Transform Religious Tourism in Bihar
According to the tourism department, over 50 acres of land will be acquired for the development at a cost of ₹120 crore, with an additional ₹23.66 crore earmarked for building tourist facilities such as rest houses, walkways, sanitation units, and visitor centers.
Once land acquisition is completed, the construction of a grand temple complex will begin. The selection process for implementing agencies is currently in its final stages.
This initiative aligns with the Ramayana Circuit, a central government-backed plan aimed at linking locations associated with Lord Ram’s journey, turning them into tourism hubs with modern amenities while retaining their mythological essence.
Key Ramayana Sites in Bihar to Receive Development Boost
Besides Sitamarhi, several other districts in Bihar are being brought under the Ramayana Circuit plan. Highlights include:
- Panthpakar Temple Complex (Sitamarhi): ₹23.66 crore has been sanctioned to develop this important site, known for its historical association with Mata Janaki.
- Ramrekha Ghat (Buxar): A sacred spot linked to Lord Ram’s time in exile will be developed with a ₹13.24 crore investment.
- Luv-Kush Park (Valmikinagar): Inspired by the twin sons of Lord Ram, this park will serve as both a recreational and educational site for visitors.
- Fulhar Sthan (Madhubani): Believed to be the place where Lord Ram and Sita first met, this location will see development worth ₹31.13 crore.
- Ahilya Sthan (Darbhanga): A site of spiritual importance, it will be modernized and linked directly to the Ramayana tourism circuit.
Additionally, budget hotels will be established in Sitamarhi, Buxar, and Rohtas with an investment of ₹84.27 crore, addressing the long-standing concern about lack of quality accommodations for pilgrims and tourists.
Punaura Dham’s Spiritual and Cultural Importance
Punaura Dham holds a revered place in the hearts of Hindu devotees. Believed to be the birthplace of Mata Sita, it attracts thousands of pilgrims annually, especially during festivals like Ram Navami and Sita Navami. Despite its religious importance, the site has long lacked the infrastructure and facilities to accommodate large numbers of visitors.
By modeling the development on Ayodhya’s successful transformation, Bihar hopes to boost religious tourism, create local employment opportunities, and enhance the cultural pride of the region.
Statements from Officials and Project Goals
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has emphasized the importance of reviving mythologically significant sites to promote Bihar as a religious tourism destination. “The aim is to restore these sacred places to their rightful glory while ensuring modern facilities for tourists,” he said in a recent address.
Tourism department officials confirmed that the projects will include eco-friendly development, digital signages, interpretation centers, and guided tour options to enrich visitor experiences. Additionally, local artisans and vendors will be included in the planning to ensure that the economic benefits reach grassroots levels.
