T20 World Cup History: Only One Indian Century in Over a Decade

Suresh Raina is the only Indian to score a century in T20 World Cup history, achieving 101 runs against South Africa in 2010.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has been a fixture of international cricket since 2007. With nine editions already completed, the upcoming 2026 tournament will mark the 10th edition of the event.

Co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the competition is scheduled to begin on February 7. India will aim to make a strong impact once again, having won the inaugural 2007 edition and most recently lifting the trophy in 2024.

Over the years, the T20 World Cup has generally favored batters, with the fast-paced format encouraging aggressive strokeplay. High scores and match-defining innings have become a signature feature of the tournament, often putting bowlers under significant pressure.

Only One Indian Has Scored a T20 World Cup Century

Despite India’s legendary batting lineup, only one Indian player has ever scored a century in a T20 World Cup match. Many have come close, but the elusive three-figure mark has been achieved just once.

It is not Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. The distinction belongs to Suresh Raina, who remains the only Indian batter to record a century in T20 World Cup history.

Raina’s Historic 2010 Knock

Raina’s feat came during the 2010 T20 World Cup held in the West Indies. On May 2, India faced South Africa in a Group C match at Gros Islet, St. Lucia. Batting first, India posted a strong total of 186 for 5, largely thanks to Raina’s brilliant innings.

He scored 101 runs off 60 balls, reaching his century in just 59 deliveries. His innings included nine fours and five sixes, helping India set a competitive total. South Africa managed only 172, giving India a 14-run victory.

A Record That Still Stands

That innings made Suresh Raina the first and only Indian to score a T20 World Cup century. More than a decade later, the record still stands, highlighting the rarity and significance of the achievement on cricket’s biggest T20 stage.
