Shubman Gill has struggled to score big in T20Is. India fans hope for a breakthrough in the second T20I against South Africa today.
A few years ago, Shubman Gill was regarded as the most promising new talent within the Indian cricket team, particularly in limited-overs formats.
He achieved remarkable success in the IPL and fulfilled his responsibilities in international selections as well. However, recent developments appear to have deviated from expectations, exemplified most recently by his four-run inning against South Africa in Cuttack.
The Men in Blue will face the Proteas in the second match of their ongoing five-match T20I series later today, December 11, 2025, with particular attention on the vice-captain.

Shubman Gill Has Yet to Make a Significant Impact Against South Africa in T20 Internationals
Gill has participated in only three T20 Internationals against the Proteas, two in December 2023 and the most recent on Tuesday.
All of these innings collectively yield a total score of 12. He scored a failure against them for the first time in the shortest format, followed by an 8, and a 4 in the most recent match.
These statistics do not precisely inspire confidence as he prepares to face the 2024 T20 World Cup finalists once more.
It is worth noting that he appears to be in excellent form with any shot that makes contact, but has not succeeded in transforming those starts into substantial innings. Today may represent a turning point, but his recent ten innings in the format cast lingering doubt.
Shubman Gill: An Analysis of His Last 10 T20I Innings
Although it is understandable that Shubman Gill is returning from an injury that caused him to miss the India versus South Africa Test and ODI series, he has not exhibited consistent performance in the format for some time.
His most recent ten T20I innings (excluding the IND vs SA 1st T20I) have yielded the following scores: 29, 46, 15, 5, 37, 12, 4, 29, 47, and 5. In fact, he has not tallied a fifty since July 2024.
With players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson vying for the opening position, the onus will be on Shubman Gill to substantiate his selection in the playing XI.
