New Delhi: Punjab Kings pulled off a thrilling last-over victory against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash. Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, PBKS chased down the target in dramatic fashion, with Iyer contributing 18 runs off just 11 balls, including two crucial sixes.
Despite the match-winning performance, Shreyas Iyer received a major setback from the IPL authorities. The IPL committee imposed a hefty fine on the Punjab Kings captain for failing to complete the allotted 20 overs within the scheduled time.

According to the official announcement, this was Shreyas Iyer’s first offense of the season, falling under Article 2.22 of the IPL code of conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate requirements. As a result, Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh for the slow over-rate.
IPL Issues Strict Warning for Repeat Offenses by Shreyas Iyer and Team Members
The IPL has also warned that if Shreyas Iyer commits a similar violation later in the season, the fine will double to ₹24 lakh, and the team’s six other players may also face penalties. For repeated offenses, a suspension for one match could also be enforced, alongside fines of ₹6 lakh or 25% of match fees for other team members.

Adding to the drama, Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury during the match. While at the non-striker’s end, a shot from Cooper Connolly struck Iyer’s hand. He appeared in pain but, after brief treatment, returned to continue batting. Post-match, Iyer confirmed that the injury was not serious.
Cricket fans celebrated PBKS’s victory, but the Shreyas Iyer fine has sparked discussions about over-rate discipline in the IPL and the strict enforcement of rules, even for top-performing captains.
This incident serves as a reminder that while thrilling cricket moments define the IPL, adherence to the rules remains crucial for both players and teams throughout the season.
