Afghanistan’s star cricketer Rashid Khan has made a surprising revelation in his newly released memoir Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom, claiming he once received an informal offer to leave his country and represent India and Australia in international cricket.
According to the 27-year-old leg-spinner, the most direct approach came during the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League, while he was playing for Gujarat Titans. Rashid recounts a meeting with a “high-ranking official” linked to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, who allegedly encouraged him to consider relocating due to Afghanistan’s unstable political situation.
Details of the Alleged Offer
In his book, Rashid claims the official suggested he move to India permanently and assured him of support. He writes that he was told: “The situation in your country is very bad. Come stay in India. We will give you Indian documents, live here, play cricket here.”

Despite the tempting nature of the proposal, Rashid says he declined respectfully. He recalls responding with gratitude but firmly stating his loyalty: “Thank you very much. I am playing for my country, Afghanistan.”
The Afghan spinner also revealed that he received a similar offer from Australia, although he did not elaborate much on that interaction. Reinforcing his stance, he wrote, “If I don’t play for my country, I won’t play for any other country either.”
A Story of Loyalty and National Pride
Rashid Khan’s commitment to Afghanistan has been a defining aspect of his career. Back in 2018, after a standout performance for Sunrisers Hyderabad, a wave of Indian fans on social media even urged the government to grant him Indian citizenship.
The issue gained such traction that former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and then Afghan President Ashraf Ghani publicly addressed it. Ghani had then described Rashid as a “national hero” who rightfully belongs to Afghanistan.
Reaffirming His Commitment
Now, in his memoir, Rashid has once again made his position clear. The cricketer, who recently celebrated the birth of his son Azlan, reiterated that representing Afghanistan remains his top priority.
His statement underscores a strong sense of national pride and loyalty, even in the face of opportunities that could have reshaped his international career.
